Biden: Days into job, news of $1 trillion deficit

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden says that he and President Barack Obama had been on the job less than a week when a top economic adviser told them the country was facing a trillion-dollar budget deficit.

Biden says that Obama replied, "But I haven't done anything yet."

Biden blames the deficit on the previous Bush administration, adding that it "put two wars on a credit card" and gave tax cuts to the wealthy after inheriting a balanced budget and revenue surplus from the Clinton administration.

Biden hammered GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney for comments on a leaked video in which Romney describes 47 percent of Americans as paying no federal income tax and believing "they are victims."

Biden made his remarks Saturday to more than 2,000 people in Fort Myers, Fla.

Tips And Advice For Dealing In Commercial Real Estate | Eric Chua ...

Having to deal with the commercial property business can be stressful and overwhelming for those new to it and even to those experienced with it. In this article, you can find tips to help reduce your stress when it comes to dealing with commercial real estate.

Once you have narrowed your choices down to two major contenders, you should expand your decision to include the big picture. Getting the financing you need is a difficult thing, regardless of the size of the property. This is generally like buying something in bulk, the more you buy, the less it is is per unit.

Pest Control

TIP! Create or purchase an inspection checklist before starting to evaluate properties. Tour each potential property, and check how well it meets the requirements on the list.

You should know what kind of pest control services are available to you when renting or leasing. This is especially important if the region is known for certain types of pest infestations. If this is the case, ask specifically what the landlord will do with regard to pest control.

Borrowers are required to order the appraisal in commercial loans. The bank won?t let you make use of it later. Do the right thing and order it yourself.

Practice calm and patience when you are looking into the real estate market. Do not make impulsive decisions. You?ll regret it quickly if your lack of research results in a property without much re-sale value. Be prepared to wait as much as a year for a suitable property to come available in your area.

TIP! If you are considering a commercial real estate investment, think big! A building including five units is no more difficult to administrate than one with fifty. A small building requires the same paperwork and financing as a larger building, and larger buildings end up costing less per unit.

Don?t ever underestimate the value of the relation between you and lenders, be them private or investors. Often, commercial real estate is sold before ever being listed as being for sale. The only way you might find out about it is through the network of people you have carefully developed over time. Private lenders and investors are often in the know and can be key to informing you of a potentially good deal.

When choosing a broker, investigate their years of actual commercial market experience. Make certain that they have experience and expertise in the community you are dealing in. Entering into an exclusive contract with that particular broker is a good idea.

This makes it easier to determine if the terms are consistent with the property?s rent roll and pro forma financial disclosures. Unless you carefully go over these terms, it is possible that you will have to go through additional paperwork and transactions.

TIP! When renting out your own commercial properties, keep in mind that is always best to have them occupied. You are legally responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of unoccupied spaces.

One of the biggest differences between a residential loan and a commercial one is the size of the down payment you?re required to make. Look for lenders who have the best rates and keep your personal credit and your business line of credit in good standing for the best chances of qualifying for a loan. Also, make sure to keep your ear open for the best investments.

Those who invest in commercial real estate should be aware that higher-than-usual inflation can wreck and otherwise-good investment. Years ago, it was common for leases to protect people from inflation via adjustments made through Consumer Price Index. Unfortunately, this practice has become vanishingly rare, which makes you at higher risk to suffer losses due to inflation.

Research and learn more about the Net Operating Income, a commonly used metric for commercial real estate. In order to be successful and stay profitable, watch this number closely, and take steps to make certain it does not fall into the negatives.

TIP! If inspections are part of the deal on your real estate, be sure to check all the credentials of the hired inspectors. Pest removal companies should be closely checked because many non-professionals do this work.

Consider the features that your business requires prior to searching for commercial property. You should be aware of the exact specifications you will need for your office space. If you hope to expand your business, you may want to buy extra space to save time, money and effort in the long run, especially if it?s a buyer?s market at the time of your purchase.

Prior to making any purchase, be certain that you?re dealing with a corporation or firm that truly takes care of their clients. If you don?t do your research and end up in bed with wolves, you will be the one to suffer.

Dual Agency

TIP! Feng shui might improve your commercial investing profits when used correctly in the interior design of your properties. Feng shui is about open spaces and de-cluttering: buyers will find this very interesting as well as appealing.

If you are thinking about hiring any real estate professional, read over all their disclosures. One thing you should specifically watch out for is dual agency. Dual agency is when a real estate agency is responsible for the representation of both parties involved in a transaction. When dual agency happens the Realtor on behalf of both parties. When it comes to dual agencies, both parties should actually agree to it and it should be disclosed.

Use your blog to establish an expert reputation. Doing so can assist you in finding buyers and renters for your properties.

If you are investing in commercial properties, keep an eye out for any possibilities of buying bigger. The reason for this is that it does not take too much more work to manage a larger amount of units then it does a smaller amount of units, but it will actually cost you less per unit if you buy something with more units in it.

TIP! You need to acknowledge that property has a limited lifespan. If you purchase a property without taking upkeep into account, you could find yourself with a lot of unexpected bills.

When selling a piece of commercial property, it is wise to ensure that you ask a realistic price. A variety of different criteria require consideration in order to increase or decrease your property value.

Know that larger apartment complexes are less troublesome than a smaller one; many experts say to avoid those properties with less than 10 units. No situation is the same as another, and proper reseal should help you reach a knowledgeable decision regarding any purchase.

Whether a newcomer to the game or a seasoned veteran, diving into the world of commercial property can be a huge challenge that involves a lot of stress. This article was designed to ease some of the tension and confusion associated with buying commercial real estate, and lead to a smart

TIP! Use detailed photos to create this documentation. Be especially diligent in photographing any flaws that exist when you move in, like cracks in the wall or stains on the carpet.

Spain's Popular to study capital hike at board meeting: report

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Banco Popular has called a board meeting to approve a capital increase of up to 2 billion euros ($2.57 billion), newspaper El Pais reported on Sunday.

The bank was highlighted in an independent audit by Oliver Wyman as one of the banks that would need extra capital to ride out a serious economic downturn. The report on Friday said that Spanish banks will need a total of 59.3 billion euros in extra capital in such a scenario.

The board meeting would examine the capital increase and suspension of dividend payments, El Pais said without citing a source.

Spanish newspaper ABC cited market sources as saying that the bank was looking at an increase of 1.6 billion euros and would present the plan by October 15.

Popular declined to comment on the reports.

The Oliver Wyman report said that Popular was estimated as having capital needs for 3.2 billion euros under the adverse scenario, which is looking increasingly likely with Spain in its second recession in three years and a quarter of all workers unemployed.

Spain has agreed a credit line that could provide up to 100 billion euros in European Union rescue funds for its banks. ($1 = 0.7773 euros)

Police: Minnesota office shooter among 'several' dead

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The shooter who opened fire inside a Minneapolis sign company Thursday was among "several" people found dead inside the building, according to police officials who won't specify how many people were killed.

Police had previously said at least two people were killed and four were wounded, including three critically, during the afternoon shootings at Accent Signage Systems. But during a Thursday evening news conference, Minneapolis Police Deputy Chief Kris Arneson wouldn't confirm the numbers.

"We do have several victims inside that are dead," Arneson said. When pressed to say how many, she said she didn't know and that the investigation could take several days.

She released few other details, including the shooter's possible motive or gender, but said the person who fired the shots died inside the building from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She said police did not fire at the shooter.

None of the victims' names has been released.

Hennepin County Medical Center was treating four patients from the scene Thursday night, including three men in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Someone from inside the building called 911 around 4:30 p.m. to report the shootings, police said. The first officers on the scene quickly began evacuating people from the business, which is nestled in a residential area on the city's north side, and closed off several blocks.

Dozens of squad cars and SWAT officers swarmed the neighborhood Thursday afternoon, and traffic was stopped on a nearby bridge along Penn Avenue, where officers had rifles drawn and pointed at the business and a park below.

By Thursday evening, police vehicles were still surrounding the business.

People from the neighborhood milled around but deputies kept them back.

Marques Jones, 18, of Minneapolis, said he was outside a building down the street having his high school senior pictures taken when he and his photographer heard gunfire that sounded close.

"We heard about four to five gunshots," Jones said. "We were shocked at what happened and we just looked at each other. We all just took off running to our vehicles."

According to Accent Signage Systems' website, the company makes interior signage and lists its founder as Reuven Rahamim. A phone messages left at the business was not immediately returned, and a woman who answered the phone at Rahamim's residential listing declined comment.

The company employed 28 people as of July, according to a feature on the business in Finance & Commerce, a local business publication. The paper reported that U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Francisco Sanchez visited it in August in a trip focused on exporting, and praised the company for its innovation.

The company developed a patented technology for producing signs in Braille and had licensed out the technology to companies in 38 countries, the newspaper said.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said employees who were working when the shootings occurred were together and being cared for Thursday evening.

"We are deeply sorry about what has happened here," he said, calling the shootings "a horrible tragedy."

"Looper" Review: Stylish Time-Travel Tale That Loses Race With Clock

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - For a movie that's concerned with the passage of time, "Looper" allows the pacing to get painfully flaccid in its middle section. More's the pity, because the strong first act promises a smart and stylish movie about the vagaries of time travel.

While the stylish never goes away, the smart does, making this the second Rian Johnson movie in a row (following "The Brothers Bloom," the writer-director's sophomore effort after his Sundance hit debut "Brick") that looks great but meanders while doing it.

In a requisite grimy-city-of-the-future, Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a "looper," which is a very specific kind of hit man. Decades beyond Joe's era, time travel will be discovered and immediately banned.

The only ones using it are mobsters, who dispose of their targets by sending them 30 years into the past so that Joe and other loopers can exterminate the unlucky saps and destroy the bodies.

When a looper "closes the loop," it means he kills his future self, collects a big payday and counts down the three decades until his own demise. Working for mobster Abe (Jeff Daniels, amusingly playing against type), Joe squirrels away his money and dreams of running off to France, even though Abe tells him the action is in China.

In a clever shout-out, Abe operates out of a nightclub called La Belle Aurore, named for the Paris bar where Rick and Ilsa hung out in "Casablanca" before the Nazis marched into town.

Naturally, Joe is eventually called upon to close the loop, but his older self (Bruce Willis) isn't going down without a fight. Future Joe met the woman of his dreams in Shanghai and watched her die before getting sent back in time, so he hopes to fix the future by changing the past.

All very well and good, and certainly the foundation for a fun little time-travel thriller -- and for the first third or so, that's what "Looper" is, from its stylish representation of the near future to the clever way Johnson lays out the exposition and the rules for the story. (Paul Dano's character finds out the hard way what Abe and his goons do to loopers who fail to close the loop.)

But by the time younger Joe hides out at the farm owned by Sara (Emily Blunt) to lie in wait for older Joe, the movie starts bogging down in circular storytelling and general meandering, leading to a viewing experience that feels awfully padded at two hours-plus. And none of this is helped by the idea of Emily Blunt as a woman who lives on a farm: That's the second-least convincing aspect of "Looper."

Number one is Gordon-Levitt's makeup job - rather than allow us to believe that the actor could simply age into becoming Bruce Willis, Johnson has decided to all but hide the "Inception" star under a thick layer of latex or CG effects or whatever it is that's going on with his face.

There's never that magic moment when, say, you stop thinking "That's Nicole Kidman with a fake nose" and instead decide, "That's Virginia Woolf."

From start to finish, Gordon-Levitt's face will make you think, "Why does he look like the love child of Kirk Cameron and Robert Forster?"

(Besides, it's not like we don't know what Bruce Willis actually looked like 30 years ago. Couldn't they just have put Gordon-Levitt into one of those white tuxes from the "Moonlighting" TV show and handed him a Seagram's wine cooler?)

By the time the inevitable time-travel paradoxes start kicking in - how could that be there if in the new reality this was no longer the other thing? - "Looper" has long since wasted its own potential.

When it eventually pops up on cable, you'll have the option of mastering time and space by watching the first 20 or 30 minutes and then turning it off forever.

Peering to the edge of a black hole

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Using a continent-spanning telescope, an international team of astronomers has peered to the edge of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy. For the first time, they have measured the black hole's "point of no return" -- the closest distance that matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.

A black hole is a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Its boundary is known as the event horizon.

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says lead author Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."

The team examined the black hole at the center of a giant elliptical galaxy called Messier 87 (M87), which is located about 50 million light-years from Earth. That black hole is 6 billion times more massive than the Sun. It's surrounded by an accretion disk of gas swirling toward the black hole's maw. Although the black hole is invisible, the accretion disk is hot enough to glow.

"Even though this black hole is far away, it's so big that its apparent size on the sky is about the same as the black hole at the center of the Milky Way," says co-author Jonathan Weintroub of the CfA. "That makes it an ideal target for study."

According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, a black hole's mass and spin determine how close material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. The team was able to measure this innermost stable orbit and found that it's only 5.5 times the size of the black hole's event horizon. This size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole.

The observations were made by linking together radio telescopes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a virtual telescope called the Event Horizon Telescope, or EHT. The EHT is capable of seeing details 2,000 times finer than the Hubble Space Telescope.

The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland, and the South Pole, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.

The work is being published in Science Express.

Michael Savage leaves radio show after legal win

Savage won a legal battle Thursday Sept. 27, 2012 and announced he was leaving Talk Radio Network, which broadcast his show that attracted more than 8 million listeners a week. (AP Photo/John Storey)

(AP) ? Michael Savage's talk show left the airwaves Thursday after the conservative host won a legal battle with his longtime employer, although his attorney said discussions with new networks are already under way.

Savage posted a message on his website Thursday evening under the headline "Free at Last!" that said he was free to work with any station or network from now on. He said he "will not be heard on the radio for some time."

His attorney Daniel Horowitz said Savage left Talk Radio Network after obtaining a favorable ruling in arbitration Thursday afternoon.

More than 8 million people listen to Savage's show each week, placing him behind only Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity in ratings, according to the magazine Talkers. The immediate effect that his abrupt departure would have on companies that advertise on his show was unclear.

An email sent to Oregon-based Talk Radio Network was not immediately returned. Savage's bio and name already have been removed from the company's website.

Horowitz says Savage has been fighting the network for two years to get out a contract that was 10 years old and prevented the host from switching employers. Horowitz said the agreement lacked protections afforded to artists and entertainers under California law, and tied Savage to Talk Radio Network indefinitely.

Horowitz said Savage spent more than $900,000 fighting his case but was awarded more than $1 million in arbitration. The agreement also calls for Savage to be able to obtain all archived tapes of his show.

Savage, who broadcasts from San Francisco, was heard on nearly 400 stations and has gained notoriety for offending immigrants and minorities, calling the Muslim holy book, the Quran, a "book of hate" and being banned in 2009 from traveling to England for allegedly fostering extremism or hatred. After that decision, the host appealed to one of the targets of his barbs, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for help.

A State Department spokesman said at the time that countries have a right to determine who is allowed to enter, but declined to comment further on Savage's request.

Ret. military leaders slam junk food in schools - Army News | News ...

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2012/09/gannett-retired-military-leaders-want-junk-food-out-schools-092512/

By Nanci Hellmich - USA TODAY
Posted : Tuesday Sep 25, 2012 7:54:38 EDT

Several hundred retired military leaders are raising red flags about childhood obesity in the U.S. and its impact on finding qualified recruits, calling for junk food to be booted out of schools and healthier fare to be offered in vending machines and a la carte lines.

Mission: Readiness, a group of more than 300 retired generals and admirals, is releasing a new report today saying that the 40 percent of students who buy high-calorie, low-nutrient junk food from school vending machines and cafeteria a la carte lines consume an average of 130 calories a day from those types of foods (candy, chips, cookies, pastries). That?s roughly 5 percent to 10 percent of the calories kids and teens should eat in a day.

The analysis says that junk food adds up to 400 billion ?empty? calories in a year or the calories in almost 2 billion candy bars, which would weigh almost 90,000 tons, more than the weight of the aircraft carrier Midway (70,000 tons).

All those extra calories are contributing to childhood obesity, a problem that means many young people are too heavy to serve in the military, ultimately putting national security at risk, the report says.

Three-quarters of those ages 17 to 24, or about 26 million young people, cannot serve in the military, a quarter of them because they are overweight or obese, says retired Air Force lieutenant general Norman Seip, a spokesman for Mission: Readiness, which advocates policies that would help young Americans get ready to serve. Other reasons young people can?t join if they want to: They don?t have a high school diploma, have criminal records or suffer from other health problems.

The new report, called ?Still Too Fat to Fight,? is a follow-up to the group?s 2010 report, ?Too Fat to Fight.?

?We look at childhood obesity not only as a health crisis but a national security issue,? Seip says. ?When 25 percent of young people can?t join the military simply because they are overweight, that?s an issue that needs to be dealt with.?

Right now, all the armed services are meeting their recruiting goals because of the economy, Seip says, ?but we shouldn?t use the current economy as a recruiting strategy.

?At the end of the day, it?s not our aircrafts, our tanks, our ships or our information technology that keep our nation safe and sound, it?s the men and women who wear the uniform and so proudly serve,? he says.

About a third of children and teens are obese or overweight, putting kids at a greater risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health problems. They are also more likely to be overweight or obese as adults. Obesity is still climbing among boys aged 12 to 19, government statistics show.

In fact, the male rates of being overweight or obese (73 percent) in the U.S. are already higher than those of any other major country, the report says. ?While there has been nearly doubling of obesity rates worldwide since 1980, no other major country?s military forces face the challenges of weight gain confronting America?s armed forces.?

For example, many accepted recruits are diverted to special training to address inadequate physical fitness before they can even begin basic training, and those costs add up, the report says.

The retired military group based its caloric intake estimates on a survey of junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages in schools conducted in 2005 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). That survey found that about 40 percent of elementary, middle and high school students ? 16 million school kids ? bought and consumed these foods and beverages on any given day.

For its report, Mission: Readiness focused on junk foods, which are called ?competitive foods,? and factored out sugar-sweetened sodas because major beverage companies have stopped marketing high-sugar sodas to schools since the survey was conducted.

The retired military group is urging the government to move quickly in releasing updated nutritional standards for competitive foods in schools as required by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. The law directed the USDA to set new nutrition standards for all food served in schools. The updated standards for school meals have been released and are being implemented, but the standards for competitive foods served in a la carte lines, vending machines and stores have not been released.

?We believe the country has taken a step in the right direction in serving healthy foods at schools meals, but we need to finish the job and make sure there are high nutrition standards for foods sold in vending machines and a la carte lines,? Seip says. ?We urge Congress to put the health of our children ahead of special interest groups and adopt the USDA?s updated competitive foods standards.?

Justin DeJong, a USDA spokesman, says, ?Secretary Tom Vilsack has asked for additional time to review the proposed standards for competitive foods to ensure that we do what is right for kids in a way that is workable to the school districts that will be charged with implementation.?

Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, says about a dozen states have ?reasonable standards? for what?s sold in vending machines in schools, but there is still a lot room for improvement in schools. ?We are on the road to making improvements in foods sold in vending machines in schools, but we?re not there yet,? she says.

The military has been concerned about school nutrition for years and was instrumental in persuading Congress to pass the original National School Lunch Program in 1946, Seip says.

If you are overweight as child, there?s a good chance you?ll be obese as a young adult, Seip says, ?and you?ll be chasing that problem all your life. Developing healthy eating and exercise habits as early as possible is critical.?

?This is a team effort. This is not a spectator sport,? Seip says. ?There?s a role for everyone to play ? whether it be parents, government, schools, the medical community, food and beverage industry ? to turn the childhood obesity epidemic around.?

Six Hip Fitness Activities of 2012 | kodjoworkout.com

It?s good to know that people have become more conscious when it comes to personal health and fitness. This is evident in the popularity of various health and fitness activities that foster the so-called holistic well-being. Over the years, we have seen a steady rise in the number of individuals who are into physical activities like running, yoga, Pilates, and even pole dancing.

Not to be outdone, the year 2012 also has its share of noteworthy fitness trends that are attracting a horde of enthusiasts. Here are some of these.

1. Zumba

This Latin-inspired dance exercise is quite popular to health buffs that are into fun and free movements. An easy, effective, and invigorating way to lose those unnecessary pounds through fast calorie burning, Zumba has been deemed as the new pole-dancing minus the oftentimes precarious acrobatics.

2. Hot Yoga

Yoga is not a new occurrence in the fitness arena. But Hot Yoga is. If you are wondering what the difference between the two is, just picture a sauna where people are in various body-twisting positions as opposed to just sitting and sweating like immobile ice packs, and you pretty much get the idea.

3. Express Workouts

Whereas fast food has been generally viewed as the ultimate nemesis of health gurus, the same cannot be said with fast or express workouts. These exercise programs are specifically tailored for individuals who are always on the go?those who cannot allot more than 30 minutes from their hectic schedule for a much needed energy and health boost.

4. Beaming

This fitness trend is perhaps the most obscure from the list. Backed with a rather strict patent, this exercise is not something you can subscribe to from the neighborhood fitness center. As the name suggests, this fitness activity employs the use of a 2-inch high beam where participants stand on. The main objective is to keep one?s balance and stay on the beam through proper control of all bodily components including the bum and leg muscles.

5. Muay Thai Kickboxing

If you wish to let out steam and lose pounds at the same time, then this exercise is a must try. Considered as Thailand?s national sport, Muay Thai has successfully crossed over to the western front and is now believed to be quite popular in the United States, specifically to New Yorkers that belong in the oftentimes stressful and competitive financial hub. This combat sport incorporates agility, precision, and a good deal of simulated violence which perhaps explains its popularity in the US? stock market set?a group of overachieving metaphorical cutthroats.

6. The Only Way is Dance (TOWID)

If dancing simply won?t do it for you, then perhaps TOWID is your thing. This physical fitness regimen is a melting pot of all the good things life has to offer: aerobics, street dance, and of course an array of chart-topping pop songs from the likes of Lady Gaga and Beyonce. This activity will get you moving your bum and singing your heart out to the tune of 1,000 calories/hour.

Using artificial intelligence to chart the universe

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Astronomers in Germany have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm to help them chart and explain the structure and dynamics of the universe around us with unprecedented accuracy. The team, led by Francisco Kitaura of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, report their results in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Scientists routinely use large telescopes to scan the sky, mapping the coordinates and estimating the distances of hundreds of thousands of galaxies and so enabling them to create a map of the large-scale structure of the Universe. But the distribution that astronomers see is intriguing and hard to explain, with galaxies forming a complex 'cosmic web' showing clusters, filaments connecting them, and large empty regions in between.

The driving force for such a rich structure is gravitation. This force originates from two components; firstly the 5% of the universe that appears to be made of 'normal' matter that makes up the stars, planets, dust and gas we can see and secondly the 23% made up of invisible 'dark' matter. Alongside these some 72% of the cosmos is made up of a mysterious 'dark energy' that rather than exerting a gravitational pull is thought to be responsible for accelerating the expansion of the universe. Together these three constituents are described in the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model for the cosmos, the starting point for the work of the Potsdam team.

Measurements of the residual heat from the Big Bang -- the so-called Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation or CMBR emitted 13700 million years ago -- allow astronomers to determine the motion of the Local Group, the cluster of galaxies that includes the Milky Way, the galaxy we live in. Astronomers try to reconcile this motion with that predicted by the distribution of matter around us and its associated gravitational force, but this is compromised by the difficulty of mapping the dark matter in the same region.

"Finding the dark matter distribution corresponding to a galaxy catalogue is like trying to make a geographical map of Europe from a satellite image during the night that only shows the light coming from dense populated areas," says Dr Kitaura.

To try to solve this problem he developed a new algorithm based on artificial intelligence (AI). It starts with the fluctuations in the density of the universe seen in the CMBR, then models the way that matter collapses into today's galaxies over the subsequent 13 billion years. The results of the AI algorithm are a close fit to the observed distribution and motion of galaxies.

Dr Kitaura comments, "Our precise calculations show that the direction of motion and 80% of the speed of the galaxies that make up the Local Group can be explained by the gravitational forces that arise from matter up to 370 million light years away. In comparison the Andromeda Galaxy, the largest member of the Local Group, is a mere 2.5 million light years distant so we are seeing how the distribution of matter at great distances affects galaxies much closer to home.

'Our results are also in close agreement with the predictions of the LCDM model. To explain the rest of the 20% of the speed, we need to consider the influence of matter up to about 460 million light years away, but at the moment the data are less reliable at such a large distance.

'Despite this caveat, our model is a big step forward. With the help of AI, we can now model the universe around us with unprecedented accuracy and study how the largest structures in the cosmos came into being."

Google Mapping May Have Spotted Shooter

Google's effort to revamp its mapping system took an eerie turn when one of its camera trucks captured what looked like suspicious behavior in Detroit.

In September 2009, Google's camera snapped photos of a man with a gun standing on the porch of the house that is said to be where a 17-month-old was found dead last summer.

The photo shows a shirtless man pointing a gun at the street. There are four other people behind him, all gazing toward the camera.

All parties on the porch look young, perhaps in their teens. The series of photos shows how they all turn to look at the Google truck as it passes by.

A meteorologist from Maryland, Jacob Wykoff, who stumbled upon the photo on Reddit, told ABC News that he found it frightening.

"Anytime you see a gun pointed at a cameraman it gets kinda scary," he said. "Detroit kind of has a reputation nowadays for doing that kind of stuff. It wasn't that out of the ordinary."

Habitual or not, the death of the 17-month-old child still strikes a chord in the Detroit population. Police say it hasn't been determined exactly how she died, and no one has been charged in her death.

People have been speaking up on the DetroitYes forum, saying this is the house where Zyia Turner, the the young child, last June.

One person commenting had compared each house with that in the Google image and found that the photo and the alleged crime scene matched.

"Noticed some similarities. Same cream-colored brick, same tapered shape to the brick columns, same green Astroturf glued to the porch, same wrought-iron security door, same gutter security camera and the same neighbor's fence."

Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy told CBS Detroit, though, that this photo was not enough to seal the case, and that many questions still remained.

"Was it this person's home? Because you do have a right to bear arms in your home," Worthy told CBS Detroit. "Certainly, it looks like he's on a porch that's attached to a home, so that would not be a legal issue."

Obama solidifies lead over Romney, ahead by five points: Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama maintains a lead of 5 percentage points over Republican Mitt Romney as he solidifies his advantage in the U.S. presidential race, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday.

Obama leads Romney among likely voters by a margin of 48 percent to 43 percent, the daily online tracking poll showed. Obama has led the poll since September 7, shortly after the Democratic convention.

"First it was a bump and then it was a post-convention bump and then it was the remainder of the bump, and now it's just a lead," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said.

Obama led Romney by double-digit margins on a range of personal attributes, from likability to whether he will protect American jobs to whether he appears presidential. Romney only led on the question of whether he was a "man of faith," by 43 percent to 34 percent.

Obama's lead has changed little over the past week as Romney has suffered a series of setbacks - most notably the Monday release of a secretly recorded video that showed the Republican candidate dismissing Obama supporters as welfare recipients with no sense of personal responsibility.

The video has dominated headlines but is unlikely to sway independent voters who will pick their candidate based on the state of the economy, Clark said. As voters conclude the economy is moving in the right direction, however tentatively, they appear to be moving toward Obama.

Clark said she expects the polls to tighten a bit but gives Obama a 70 percent to 80 percent chance of winning the November 6 election.

The poll surveyed 2,078 registered voters and 1,437 likely voters between September 16 and September 20.

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of 2.9 percentage points for likely voters and 2.5 percentage points for registered voters.

NASA Mars rover targets unusual rock enroute to first destination

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has driven up to a football-size rock that will be the first for the rover's arm to examine.

Curiosity is about 8 feet (2.5 meters) from the rock. It lies about halfway from the rover's landing site, Bradbury Landing, to a location called Glenelg. In coming days, the team plans to touch the rock with a spectrometer to determine its elemental composition and use an arm-mounted camera to take close-up photographs.

Both the arm-mounted Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer and the mast-mounted, laser-zapping Chemistry and Camera Instrument will be used for identifying elements in the rock. This will allow cross-checking of the two instruments.

The rock has been named "Jake Matijevic." Jacob Matijevic (mah-TEE-uh-vik) was the surface operations systems chief engineer for Mars Science Laboratory and the project's Curiosity rover. He passed away Aug. 20, at age 64. Matijevic also was a leading engineer for all of the previous NASA Mars rovers: Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity.

Curiosity now has driven six days in a row. Daily distances range from 72 feet to 121 feet (22 meters to 37 meters).

"This robot was built to rove, and the team is really getting a good rhythm of driving day after day when that's the priority," said Mars Science Laboratory Project Manager Richard Cook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

The team plans to choose a rock in the Glenelg area for the rover's first use of its capability to analyze powder drilled from interiors of rocks. Three types of terrain intersect in the Glenelg area -- one lighter-toned and another more cratered than the terrain Curiosity currently is crossing. The light-toned area is of special interest because it retains daytime heat long into the night, suggesting an unusual composition.

"As we're getting closer to the light-toned area, we see thin, dark bands of unknown origin," said Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. "The smaller-scale diversity is becoming more evident as we get closer, providing more potential targets for investigation."

Researchers are using Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) to find potential targets on the ground. Recent new images from the rover's camera reveal dark streaks on rocks in the Glenelg area that have increased researchers' interest in the area. In addition to taking ground images, the camera also has been busy looking upward.

On two recent days, Curiosity pointed the Mastcam at the sun and recorded images of Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, passing in front of the sun from the rover's point of view. Results of these transit observations are part of a long-term study of changes in the moons' orbits. NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, which arrived at Mars in 2004, also have observed solar transits by Mars' moons. Opportunity is doing so again this week.

"Phobos is in an orbit very slowly getting closer to Mars, and Deimos is in an orbit very slowly getting farther from Mars," said Curiosity's science team co-investigator Mark Lemmon of Texas A&M University, College Station. "These observations help us reduce uncertainty in calculations of the changes."

In Curiosity's observations of Phobos this week, the time when the edge of the moon began overlapping the disc of the sun was predictable to within a few seconds. Uncertainty in timing is because Mars' interior structure isn't fully understood.

Phobos causes small changes to the shape of Mars in the same way Earth's moon raises tides. The changes to Mars' shape depend on the Martian interior which, in turn, cause Phobos' orbit to decay. Timing the orbital change more precisely provides information about Mars' interior structure.

During Curiosity's two-year prime mission, researchers will use the rover's 10 science instruments to assess whether the selected field site inside Gale Crater ever has offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

Truth v lies, tech tools fight the nonsense

Politicians who lie and cheat are being held to account by the social network tools that spread half-truths in the first place

FOR those who care about truth, politics has become a depressing spectacle. Politicians have always bent and spun the facts, but the barefaced lying of recent years is especially difficult to swallow.

The US presidential campaign is a case in point, with both sides apparently ready to lie and lie again for political gain. When Republican vice-presidential hopeful Paul Ryan implied in his speech to the convention that the car factory in his hometown was shut down under Barack Obama's watch, he must have known it wasn't true. The plant closed before Obama's inauguration.

Ryan's Democrat counterpart Joe Biden was also at it during his convention speech, repeatedly lying about Republican Medicare plans and tax policy, according to FactCheck.org, a nonpartisan scrutineer of political spin.

Perhaps politicians are simply reflecting the times in which we live, where outlandish lies and conspiracy theories spread more easily than ever. If so, there are welcome signs of a change in the atmosphere.

The same social media technologies that lubricate the spread of nonsense are being recruited to fight back. When a politician deviates from the truth, instant rebuttals are increasingly circulated around social networks. If those refutations spread far enough, the mainstream media are forced to take notice. Ryan, for example, had his convention speech picked apart line by line.

Organisations like PolitiFact and FactCheck.org are also fuelling this wave. They put in the legwork scrutinising disputed political claims, then publish their findings. There are even plans to annotate the whole web with fact checks - displayed as "layers" over websites such as The New York Times or Fox News (see "Reality checker: How to cut nonsense from the net").

These efforts will not purge the online world of lies, but are part of an escalating arms race between those who care about the truth and those who don't. At least they should raise the level of discourse above which set of lies to believe. The great political challenges of our time, from food and energy security to climate change, cannot be solved or wished away with lies and spin. Those who aspire to lead must be held to the highest standards of truth.
