End Music Discovery: Pearl Jam ? ?Chinese? (Unreleased Demo)

Consequence of Sound points out that while making rounds doing press for his latest film (which seems to be getting?.mixed reviews) We Bought A Zoo, Cameron Crowe stopped by Pearl Jam?s Sirius/XM station to premier a long lost PJ demo, ?Chinese?, which likely bubbled up from the abyss during his archive raiding sessions for the PJ20 (which if you haven?t seen it yet, is still streaming on Netflix and is phenomenal), accordingly from 1991, it?s less than structured and Eddies Vocals are from the center point, but it?s certainly indicative of the meandering and less rock centric stance PJ would take on their music in years to come. Have a listen below?

Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul, Twitter War Erupts

Original American Idol Kelly Clarkson made a surprise endorsement in the 2012 Republican presidential race last night, throwing her support behind Ron Paul.

This did not go over well with some fans.

“I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance,” she wrote of the candidate. “If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

Ron Paul PictureKelly Clarkson Live

Many of Clarkson’s 925,000 followers took issue with her support for the Texan, citing the alleged racism and homophobia of Paul's old newsletters.

“That’s because you willfully ignoring his voting record, his statements, interviews, newsletters, and policy positions,” one follower Tweeted at her.

“You are obviously living under a rock. I don’t even live in the United States and hear about his stupidity,” Tweeted another fan from abroad.

Clarkson tried to maintain calm, responding:  “I am about progress. Ron Paul is about letting people decide, not the government. I am for this.”

At that point, some came to her defense. “I love you girl,” one fan wrote. “If they dont love you over your political support, they dont love you!”

Clarkson continued to clarify her stance, noting in an extended tweet, “I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent."

"I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women’s rights, men’s rights, white/black/purple/orange rights."

"I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country."

"That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he’s my favorite.”

Some may question the wisdom of weighing in on such a topic at all, but to her credit, Clarkson kept her cool and didn’t waver from her stance.

Paul is currently battling Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum and Rick Perry for the 2012 Republican nomination.

The Iowa caucuses kick off the primary season January 3.

(AP) ? A Christmas morning fire that killed a couple and three of their grandchildren was accidentally started by fireplace embers that had been discarded near a first-floor entryway, officials said Tuesday.

The officials also said it wasn't clear if the home had working smoke detectors. Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia called the fire a "tragic accident," not the result of foul play.

Sometime between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., a friend staying in the home put fireplace ashes in a bag and left it either in or outside a mudroom and trash enclosure attached to the rear of the house, said Barry Callahan, Stamford's fire marshal. The fire was reported just after 4:40 a.m.

"The fire entered the house quickly and spread throughout the first floor and up two interior vertical openings, trapping the occupants on the upper floors," Callahan said.

Officials described a frantic scene after rescuers arrived early Sunday.

Neighbors said they were awakened by screams shortly before 5 a.m. and rushed outside to help but could do nothing as flames devoured the large Victorian home.

Stamford acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte said the children's mother, Madonna Badger, had climbed out a window onto scaffolding and then a flat roof. She was screaming for her children and pointed firefighters to the third floor.

Firefighters climbed to the third floor twice, but the heat and flames were too intense and the children were not where they thought they would be, he said.

The friend of Badger's who had been staying in the home told investigators he actually had led two of the girls downstairs, but heat from the flames separated them, Conte said. One apparently went back upstairs and another one was found with her grandmother at the bottom of the stairwell between the second and third floors, he said.

Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, was found outside. It appears he had been planning to help one of the girls get out; she had been placed on a pile of books, so he could reach in and grab her, officials said.

"When he went out the window, that's when he succumbed and she died just inside the window," Conte said.

Flames were shooting out of the house when firefighters arrived, said Brendan Keatley, a Stamford firefighter who was at the scene and president of the local firefighters union.

"Two sides of the structure were walls of flame," Keatley said.

Firefighters used a ladder and construction scaffolding outside the house to reach the third floor, but they ran into extreme heat and poor visibility in a hallway, Keatley said. Four firefighters were injured as they searched for the victims, including a captain who suffered second-degree burns on his face, Keatley said.

Fighting the fire took a physical and an emotional toll, he said, and counselors were being made available to firefighters.

"We are devastated, just like everybody else is devastated," Keatley said Tuesday.

Badger, a New York advertising executive who owned the home, and her male acquaintance escaped. Her parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson, who were visiting for the holidays, were killed, as were her three daughters ? 10-year-old Lily and 7-year-old twins Grace and Sarah.

The home's second floor was being renovated and Badger was awaiting a final inspection before she could get a final certificate of approval, said Ernie Ogera, director of operations for the city of Stamford.

There were plans for hard-wired smoke alarms, but they had not been hooked up, Ogera said. Officials did not know whether battery-operated ones were being used.

The Johnsons lived in Southbury, about 45 miles northeast of Stamford. Lomer Johnson had worked as a department store Santa Claus this season after a long career as a safety chief at Louisville, Ky.-based liquor maker Brown-Forman Corp., which he retired from several years ago.

The acquaintance who escaped, Michael Borcina, is a contractor who had done work on the home.

The severely damaged Victorian house situated along the Connecticut shoreline was torn down Monday after the buildings department determined it was unsafe and ordered it razed, Stamford fire Chief Antonio Conte said.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York-based Badger & Winters Group. She was treated at a hospital and was discharged by Sunday evening, a hospital supervisor said. Her whereabouts were unknown.

A person answering the phone Tuesday at the Badger & Winters Group said it had no statement or comment.

Borcina was listed in fair condition Tuesday at Stamford Hospital, meaning his vital signs were normal but he may be uncomfortable. He declined to comment through a hospital spokeswoman.

Borcina, 52, of New York City, is the owner of Tiberias Construction Inc., which renovates expensive homes and businesses. The company's projects have included a Donna Karan store and artist Alex Beard's studio, both in New York City, and the White House Christmas wishing tree, according to the construction firm's website.

Borcina and Badger are friends on Facebook, and he said on his Facebook page that he enjoys skydiving and scuba diving.

Property records show Badger bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house was situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The lot where the house stood was covered with charred debris and cordoned off by police with tape on Monday. Passers-by left floral bouquets, stuffed animals and candles.

Badger previously spent time on Shelter Island, a small, exclusive community at the eastern end of Long Island, N.Y. Town Supervisor James Dougherty said Tuesday that Madonna Badger served a few years ago on the town's deer and tick committee, which oversees the town's program to maintain healthy deer while eliminating tick-borne diseases.

How to Run Windows 8 Developer Preview From a USB

Welcome to our website

To take full advantage of all features you need to login or register. Registration is completely free and takes only a few seconds.

Howtogeek posted a guide about running Windows 8 Developer Preview from USB drive

Running Windows 8 from a USB should not be confused with installing Windows on a USB drivein this case, instead of installing it on the drive, were just running it straight from the portable drive. Heres how to do it. This is actually a new feature in Windows 8 called Windows To Go, but if you have been using the Windows 8 Developer Preview you will know that the binaries were removed for this release. The feature which will use a wizard called the Portable Workspace creator relies on existing Windows Deployment technologies, most notably imagex.exe which is a tool used to manage .WIM files. In order to do this there is a few things we need: A bootable Windows 8 PC (You can also use a Virtual Machine) A USB 3.0 16GB USB (This will work on a USB 2.0 but might appear to be a bit slow) A Windows 8 ISO File or DVD An active internet connection (To download the WAIK) So grab those few things and a hot cup of coffee and lets get started, at this point you should have your Windows 8 PC booted up and your USB connected.

Analysis: China investment wave unlikely to swamp EU (Reuters)

VENICE (Reuters) ? The sign in a boutique selling glass hand-crafted on the Venetian island of Murano betrays an uncertain grasp of English. But the owner is very sure who is to blame for the tough times confronting the 700-year-old local glassmaking industry.

"Everything in this shop is not made in China," it proclaims. A few doors away, imported Murano lookalikes sell for much less. To the untrained eye, they appear identical.

With Europe drowning in debt and flirting with recession, China's influence can only rise further. Euro zone governments would love Beijing to plough more of its $3.2 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves into their bonds.

China is also likely to chip in with a loan to the International Monetary Fund to provide a financing backstop in case Italy and Spain are shut out of the bond markets.

Last week's $3.5 billion acquisition by China Three Gorges Corp of the Portuguese government's stake in utility EDP (EDP.LS) is also a sign of things to come.

Financiers turn instinctively to fast-growing China as they try to flush out buyers for assets that are going on the block as European governments, banks and companies pay down debt.

But, despite Chinese leaders' expressing interest in diversifying the country's overseas asset base away from government paper, analysts do not expect a sea change in China's traditionally cautious approach to expanding in Western markets. Africa and Asia are likely to remain China's top targets for now.

"There are going to be opportunities, but we're not going to see China buying up Europe," said Thilo Hanemann, research director at the Rhodium Group, an investment advisory and strategic planning firm in New York.

TREADING SOFTLY

There are many reasons for the wariness.

Lengthy delays in obtaining the approval of regulators in Beijing put Chinese companies at a disadvantage in mergers and acquisitions when the seller wants a quick deal. Companies lack the management skills to integrate overseas acquisitions. And, perhaps most importantly, prospects are much brighter at home than they are in Europe.

"If you compare the rates of growth in China and in Europe, are you sensible buying into a brand that's seen its best years of growth? said Edward Radcliffe, a partner in Shanghai with Vermillion, an M&A advisory boutique that focuses on cross-border China deals.

Still, he said some larger Chinese groups, both state-owned and private, had started to explore opportunities in Europe and the United States.

The 27-member European Union is China's biggest export market. But foreign direct investment (FDI) has badly lagged, totaling $8 billion by the EU's reckoning or $12 billion on China's count - less than 0.2 percent of total FDI in the EU, according to Rhodium.

The firm has kept its own tally since 2003, but its total of $15 billion through mid-2011, though greater than the official data, is still small.

Hanemann said he was sure 2012 would see deals in Europe in technology and consumer products to enable Chinese firms to climb the value ladder and build their domestic market share.

"Ultimately, Chinese companies have to become true multinationals, like Japanese and Korean firms before them," he said. "Over the longer term, there's no reason to believe that China is going to take a different path."

But he was skeptical whether most Chinese companies would be able to seize the opportunities that were likely to crop up in the coming year. To do so, they would have to manage public perceptions in Europe and obtain quick regulatory approval at home.

"There are a lot of deals that the Chinese cannot take on. If the Chinese government sees a company making a bid for troubled assets that risks provoking a political backlash in Europe, I think they'd step in to make sure there's no embarrassment for the Chinese side."

POLITICAL OVERLAY

The failure of Chinese firms to buy Saab, the Swedish car maker that was declared bankrupt last week, was a telling example of the difficulties facing Chinese investors, Hanemann said.

But the picture is not black and white. After all, Volvo, another Swedish car maker, was successfully acquired by a Chinese rival from Ford Motor Co in 2010.

Christine Lambert-Goue, managing director in Beijing at Invest Securities China, said companies were not looking mainly for outright acquisitions but for brands, patents and technology that would bolster their position at home.

"Companies are only ready to pay for assets from Europe that will enable them to gain market share in China," she said.

Investment in Europe will take off eventually, but a deteriorating political climate represents an obstacle in the short term, said Jonathan Holslag of the Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies.

The EU, like the United States, is talking tough about Chinese "state capitalism" and is crafting a more assertive trade policy to counter what it sees as a playing field tilted against foreign companies.

For its part, Beijing smells protectionism in the air in response to its growing economic clout.

"The European Union is disappointed with the reluctance of Beijing to open its economy further, whereas Beijing complains about Europe being too reluctant to share its knowledge or to allow Chinese investors to expand their presence in important sectors like infrastructure," Holslag said.

And if Europe fails to snap out of its economic malaise, the risk is that a super-competitive China will be made a scapegoat.

"The more governments are confronted with high unemployment figures, the more we will start to see China as a challenger rather than as a savior," Holslag said.

President, first lady offer holiday tribute and Merry Christmas to troops

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is wishing a Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all Americans in his weekly radio and Internet address, with a special message of thanks to the troops.

"Let's take a moment to give thanks for their service; for their families' service; for our veterans' service," the president said Saturday. "And let's say a prayer for all our troops standing post all over the world, especially our brave men and women in Afghanistan who are serving, even as we speak, in harm's way to protect the freedoms and security we hold dear."

The president was joined by his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, in recording the weekly address. Mrs. Obama added her own word of thanks, saying "let's make sure that all of them know just how much we appreciate everything they do."

The president noted that with the Iraq war over, the last troops from that conflict are home for the holidays. And the Obamas urged people to find a way to give back to the military, directing listeners to Joining Forces, the first lady's initiative to help military families.

Republicans also set aside talk of legislative and partisan battles in their weekly address, recorded by Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.

Pence urged Americans to remember the troops and also to think of those who are less fortunate, struggling to make ends meet in the tough economy or unable to find work.

"This holiday season, let's all make a special effort to come alongside these families in their time of need and support local charities as they provide for the needs across our communities," Pence said. "Let's also make a point to personally reach out to that neighbor or friend who needs a helping hand, a kind greeting or an invitation ? it might be just the gift someone needed most."

Russian Satellite Crashes in Latest Failed Rocket Launch (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 12:51 p.m. EST.

A Russian communications satellite crashed just after liftoff Friday (Dec. 23) when its rocket apparently failed, the latest in a series of rocket launch failures for the country this year.

An unmanned Soyuz-2 rocket launched the Meridian military communications satellite from Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Russian northern region. But the rocket failed to reach orbit, making it the?fifth failed space mission for Russia?in 2011.

"This area of the space industry is in sort of a crisis," ?Russian space agency chief Vladimir Popovin told reporters in a televised press conference today. "We can say even now that the problem lies in the engine." But more analysis is needed to be certain exactly what went wrong, ?he added.

Popovin was speaking in a press conference originally aimed to celebrate the successful docking of a different Russian spacecraft, the manned Soyuz TMA-03M space capsule, at the International Space Station earlier in the day. [Cosmic Fail: Space Launch Flops of 2011]

The capsule ferried three?new crewmembers to the space station, boosting the outpost's crew size to six for the first time since September, when it dropped to three people due to delays caused by another failed Russian rocket launch in August.

"I believe that tomorrow we'll have more results that we'll be able to tell you," Popovin said during today's press conference, which was held in Russian and translated on NASA TV. Popovin and other space officials left the conference after several questions about the launch failure despite a reminder that the briefing was targeted at the successful docking.

The Soyuz-2 rocket crashed near the city of Tobolsk in Siberia,?the Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported. The Soyuz-2 rocket is an upgraded version of the country's typically dependable Soyuz booster.

Russia's space launch woes

Russia's space launch troubles this year began in February, when a Rokot launch vehicle failed to deliver a military satellite called Geo-IK2 into the proper orbit. On Aug. 18, a different rocket design, called Proton, also delivered its $300 million satellite payload into the wrong orbit.

Less than a week later, a third-stage engine problem doomed yet another rocket launch, this time a Soyuz booster carrying the robotic cargo ship Progress 44, which crashed somewhere in Siberia instead of making a routine delivery flight to the International Space Station. It was this failure of Russia's normally dependable Soyuz rockets that forced Russian and U.S. space officials to ground all Soyuz flights ? including crew launches to the space station ? until after a full investigation could be performed.

Russia resumed Soyuz rocket launches in late October with the launch of a new unmanned Progress cargo ship. Two manned Soyuz space missions followed, mid- November and most recently on Dec. 21, to bring the space station back to its full six-person crew size.

But on Nov. 8, Russia was dealt another space setback when the country's first Mars-bound spacecraft in decades failed to leave Earth orbit. The Phobos-Grunt mission aimed to land a probe on the Mars moon Phobos, collect samples of the moon and return them to Earth. The spacecraft also carried a Chinese Mars orbiter.

But Phobos-Grunt has been trapped in Earth orbit for more than a month and is expected to plunge back to Earth by Early January.

Punishments possible

According to Ria Novosti reports earlier this month, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev?has even threatened to disciplinary action, heavy fines or criminal penalties for the country's recent space woes. In December 2010, Medvedev?formally reprimanded Anatoly Perminov, the previous chief of Russia's Federal Space Agency, and outright fired two other high-ranking space officials.

Popovin said an investigation into the failure will be performed in order to develop measures to fix any flaws in the Soyuz-2 rocket engine.

The next launch of a Russian-built rocket is slated for Dec. 26, when a Proton rocket is scheduled to launch a communications satellite from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in a mission overseen by the U.S.-based firm International Launch Services. The Proton rocket is a different design than the Soyuz-2 booster.

Another Soyuz rocket, this one managed by the European launch provider Arianespace, is scheduled to launch on Dec. 28.

A Church, a Shul and a Mosque Try Faithful Experiment

By Naomi Zeveloff
From The Jewish Daily Forward

Deep in America?s heartland, a Reform synagogue, a nondenominational mosque and an Episcopalian church are all putting down roots on a 37-acre tract of land that once belonged to a Jewish country club. A body of water called Hell Creek runs through the development, over which the faith groups plan to build ?Heaven?s Bridge.?

Fantastical as it sounds, this interfaith campus is currently in the works in Omaha, Neb. Slated for completion in 2014, the Tri-Faith Initiative is an experiment in religious coexistence in a city better known as a hub of corn-fed conservatism.

?The only other place where such a thing exists is Jerusalem,? said Dr. Syed Mohiuddin, chairman of the Creighton University School of Medicine. Mohiuddin?s organization, the American Institute of Islamic Studies and Culture, is building a mosque on the campus. ?Jerusalem is so important to these three faiths. We are sort of reproducing that model.?

If the experiment works, the city of Omaha ? with a metropolitan area population of about 900,000, including 5,500 Jews, 6,000 Muslims and 4,500 Episcopalians ? will become a beacon of cooperation in a world of interreligious strife. But before that can happen, the three groups still need to navigate fears, stereotypes and bureaucratic hang-ups.

The story of the Tri-Faith Initiative began with a simple quest for a parking lot. Temple Israel, the largest synagogue in Omaha, is located in the city?s congested downtown district. On the High Holy Days, the Reform congregation borrows parking space from its two neighbors, the Omaha Community Playhouse and the First United Methodist Church. When Temple Israel?s leaders decided to relocate the congregation to West Omaha, where many of the synagogue?s members now live, they reached out to Mohiuddin, who was planning a nondenominational mosque in the same neighborhood.

?It wasn?t a directive from the rabbi to say, ?Go get with this group of Muslims,?? said Jon Meyers, a board member at Temple Israel. ?Having said that, we realized: ?Hey, this is a really cool thing. Why don?t we look at exploring this???

Limit Cold Medications During Pregnancy, Experts Advise (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- It's prudent to limit the use of over-the-counter cold and flu medications during pregnancy, experts say.

This is because some medications may contain substances that are potentially harmful to developing fetuses, or that have not been well-studied for use in pregnant women.

"Every year around this time, we get a significant number of calls from pregnant and breast-feeding women in California who are battling colds and are worried about which meds they can and can't take," said Christina Chambers, professor of pediatrics at University of California, San Diego and program director at the California Teratogen Information Service.

To help expectant mothers who are sick this holiday season, Chambers offered these cold medicine safety tips:

  • Take as little as possible. Over-the-counter cold remedies could contain up to six ingredients for a wide array of symptoms, such as a cough, runny nose or headache. Choose medications that contain just the ingredients you need for your specific symptoms.
  • Avoid oral decongestants in early pregnancy. When taken during the first trimester, these medications have been linked to a slightly heightened risk of abdominal wall defects in fetuses. Saline drops or nasal sprays may be good short-term alternatives.
  • Be cautious about herbal ingredients. Many over-the-counter medications may contain herbal ingredients that have not been evaluated for use during pregnancy.
  • Don't overdo it with lozenges. These drops may soothe a sore throat but they often contain mostly sugar. Lozenges may also contain zinc and vitamin C, which should be taken only in limited daily doses (80 to 100 milligrams per day for vitamin C and 11 milligrams per day for zinc) during pregnancy.
  • Choose alcohol-free cough syrups. Opt for cough remedies that do not contain alcohol.

Woman set afire in elevator of her NYC building (AP)

NEW YORK ? A woman burned to death in the elevator of her Brooklyn apartment building Saturday after a man ambushed her, sprayed her with liquid and set her afire with a Molotov cocktail, police said.

The unidentified man was waiting for 64-year-old Doris Gillespie, when the elevator doors opened to her floor of the Prospect Heights building. The man sprayed her with an accelerant and set her on fire, New York City police spokesman Paul Browne said.

"It was apparent he knew she was on the elevator," he said.

No arrests had been made as of early Sunday, and police were still searching for the suspect.

The brutal attack happened shortly after 4 p.m., lasted about a minute and was recorded by two video cameras, including one inside the small elevator.

Brown said the video showed the elevator doors opening to the fifth floor where Gillespie's apartment was located and the assailant stepping in and spraying her.

Gillespie, who had grocery bags in her arms, turned about 180 degrees and then crouched in an attempted to protect herself, he said. But the man sprayed her directly in the face and continued to spray her "sort of methodically" over her head and parts of her body as the bags draped off her arms. She turned around and retreated to the back of the elevator.

At some point, Browne said, the suspect then pulled out a barbeque-style lighter, used it to ignite a rag in a bottle and then waited for a few seconds before using the flames to set her afire, causing smoke to fill the elevator.

The man backed out as she fell to the floor of the elevator, Browne said, and seemed to pause before tossing the bottle inside the elevator and onto her.

Browne would not comment on the motive in the killing, but said the suspect knew his victim.

Investigators believe the suspect fled down the stairs of the building, he said.

Police released still images of the man Saturday night, showing him in a black jacket, wearing what appear to be surgical gloves and with a white dust mask perched atop his head like a pair of sunglasses. He is holding what appears to be a canister with a nozzle and spraying as he steps into the elevator.

Neighbors reported a fire in the building, unaware that the woman was burning to death in the elevator.

Residents were evacuated from the six-story building for hours Saturday night.

FX orders cold war pilot "The Americans" (omg!)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - FX has ordered the drama pilot "The Americans" about two KGB spies posing as -- you guessed it -- in suburban Washington, D.C. in the early 1980s.

The series, created by former CIA employee Joe Weisberg, follows spies Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings, who have an arranged marriage and two children who know nothing of their secret. As their relationship becomes more genuine, it is tested by the Cold War and the spies and informants they oversee.

Weisberg will executive produce with "Justified" executive producer and show runner Graham Yost. DreamWorks Television is also credited as an executive producer on the pilot, which is being produced by Fox Television Studios and FX Productions.

Weisberg worked for the CIA before becoming an author. He then moved into television and became a writer/producer on TNT's "Falling Skies."

Stocks climb after upbeat economic news

By msnbc.com news services

U.S. stocks closed higher Thursday as signs of strength in the economy and higher-than-expected profit at FedEx outweighed a stark warning from the IMF about inaction over Europe's debt crisis.

Trading was volatile before Friday's quadruple witching expiration when not only equity options expire, but also stock index futures, stock index options and individual stock futures.

Stocks pared some of their gains after Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, said the world economic outlook is "quite gloomy" and will require action by all countries to head off an escalating crisis that carries risks of a global depression.

But investors were cheered by the latest data that suggested the U.S. economy was showing modest growth.

Applications for unemployment insurance fell to a 3-1/2 year low, while a gauge of New York state manufacturing activity rose to its highest level since May and a separate measure of factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region showed a surge in new orders.

The market's gains were concentrated in defensive sectors such as utilities, suggesting uncertainty was causing risk-takers to put their portfolios in neutral as the week draws to an end, said Chad Morganlander, portfolio manager at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co in Florham Park, New Jersey.

"Unfortunately austerity without a plan for structural changes will cap economic growth and potentially could bleed into earnings. Going into the new year, portfolio managers are squaring their books for that scenario," Morganlander said. "There's a continued rotation into safety and stability in a global austerity environment."

FedEx Corp shares shot up after the package delivery company, seen as a bellwether of economic activity, reported stronger-than-expected quarterly profit.

The news from FedEx was welcome after a number of high-profile companies warned about revenues and profits in recent days. On Thursday, Honeywell International said Europe's slowing economy would take a toll on orders. But Honeywell's stock rose after it forecast profit in line with expectations.

On Wednesday, Wall Street fell for a third day to its lowest level in two weeks with the market highly sensitive to developments in Europe.

Big-cap technology shares slipped, including shares of Apple and International Business machines. Novellus Systems Inc jumped one?day after it agreed to be bought by larger rival Lam Research Corp for $3.3 billion in stock.

Michael Kors Holdings Ltd shares jumped in their debut on the New York Stock Exchange after the luxury goods company went public at $20 per share on Wednesday, above the expected range. Earlier Thursday, the stock climbed as much as 25 percent.

China sends long-missing lawyer Gao back to jail (AP)

BEIJING ? More than a year and a half after prominent civil rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng disappeared, China's government gave the first sign Friday that he is alive, saying he would be sent to prison for three years for violating his probation.

A brief report by the state-run Xinhua News Agency did not answer key questions about Gao ? the condition of his health and his whereabouts now and in the 20 months since he disappeared, presumably at the hands of the authorities.

"Are they sending him to a proper prison? Which prison was he at before? Where were they hiding him?" said Gao's brother, Gao Zhiyi, who has been on a quest to find his sibling.

Charismatic and pugnacious, Gao was a galvanizing figure for the rights movement, advocating constitutional reform and arguing landmark cases to defend property rights and political and religious dissenters. Convicted in 2006 of subversion and sentenced to three years, he was quickly released on probation before being taken away by security agents in 2009 in the first of his forced disappearances that set off an international outcry.

The Xinhua report referred to his 2006 subversion conviction and said Beijing's No. 1 Intermediate People's Court found that Gao "had seriously violated probation rules for a number of times, which led to the court decision to withdraw the probation."

The report did not explain what violations Gao had committed but said his five-year probation was due to expire next Thursday ? timing which legal experts said may have prompted the government to send Gao back to jail. "He would serve his term in prison in the next three years," the report said.

Calls to the No. 1 court and the city's appeals court rang unanswered Friday.

Gao has been held incommunicado in apparent disregard of laws and regulations for all but two months of the last three years. When he emerged from the first 14-month bout in April 2010, he told The Associated Press that he had been shunted between detention centers, farm houses and apartments across north China and repeatedly beaten and abused.

He said he had been hooded several times. His captors made him sit motionless for up to 16 hours and threatened to kill him and dump his body in a river.

"'You must forget you're human. You're a beast,'" Gao said police told him in September 2009.

At one point, six plainclothes officers bound him with belts and put a wet towel around his face for an hour, bringing on a feeling of slow suffocation.

"It's hard to fathom what they might be referring to when they say that he violated his parole given that he seems to have been under constant supervision," said Joshua Rosenzweig, a human rights researcher based in Hong Kong. "It's kind of cynical."

Formalizing Gao's detention as a prison term, Rosenzweig said, gives Chinese leaders a ready response to queries from foreign governments and officials. Gao's case has repeatedly been raised by the U.S. and European governments, drawing cryptic responses if any from Chinese officials. U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke mentioned him in a public statement last weekend.

Gao's wife, Geng He, fled China with their two children, escorted by human traffickers overland to Southeast Asia, around the time he first disappeared. They now live in the United States.

Activists in China seemed astounded and outraged by the news. Huang Qi, who runs a rights monitoring group in Sichuan province, strongly condemned what he said was the use of the judicial system to persecute dissidents and he offered his services to Gao's family.

"Gao Zhisheng has used his actions to write a glorious page in the history of the Chinese democracy movement," Huang said in a statement.

Amnesty International called the move to send Gao to prison "a travesty."

"This inhuman treatment must stop. Gao Zhisheng and his family have suffered enough and he must be freed," Catherine Baber, deputy director in Asia for the group, said in a statement.

While Gao may be the most prominent government critic to be treated so harshly in years, the authorities have done so with other dissidents.

Du Daobin, an outspoken critic also convicted of subversion and sentenced to three years in prison in 2004, did not immediately start his sentence, according to the Laogai Research Foundation, a Washington-based advocacy group that runs a website for which Du wrote. Instead, Du was released and lived under probation for four years before being sent to prison in 2008, apparently because he continued to criticize the government online.

Gao's family and supporters meanwhile have continued to campaign for him, with little result. His brother, Zhiyi, has been on a constant search for information. When he asked Beijing police in September about his brother, one officer told him Gao Zhisheng was a "missing person and no one knows where he is."

EU, IMF halt talks with Hungary over central bank (AP)

BUDAPEST, Hungary ? The European Union and the International Monetary Fund broke off preliminary talks Friday with Hungary on a financial aid package because of concerns that the government aimed to curtail the independence of the country's central bank.

Hungary said last month it would seek to work out a deal for unspecified aid from the IMF and the EU, a "security net" to reassure investors about its creditworthiness and financial stability.

Both institutions, as well as international observers, have been critical of steps taken by Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government to gain greater influence over the National Bank of Hungary, led by Andras Simor.

A new law regulating the central bank is being debated in Parliament, and on Wednesday, it was revealed that the government is also laying the legal groundwork for the possible merger of the central bank and Hungary's financial regulator.

"The European Commission is concerned about the intention of the Hungarian authorities to push forward with the adoption of laws that can potentially undermine the independence of the central bank," said a statement from Amadeu Altafaj Tardio, spokesman for EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.

"Given that the government did not inform the EU/IMF mission of any change in their intention to push for the adoption of the contested central bank law, the Commission, in close coordination with the IMF, has decided to interrupt the preparatory mission," the statement said.

Formal talks between Hungary and the IMF and EU were supposed to begin in January. It was not clear yet how Friday's move would affect those talks.

Relations between the government and Simor have been rocky since Orban was swept into power in a landslide victory in April 2010. Simor was criticized for having owned a company registered in Cyprus ? which he sold before taking on the role of central bank president ? to avoid Hungarian taxes.

Fidesz, Orban's party, has a two-thirds majority in Parliament and can pass legislation practically at will. In March, the government already gained greater control over the central bank's Monetary Council, which sets interest rates. The newly proposed changes are seen as granting the government an even tighter rein over Hungary's monetary policy while setting the stage for Simor's dismissal.

In late 2008, Hungary's previous Socialist government was given a standby loan of euro20 billion ($26 billion) to avoid bankruptcy by the IMF, the EU and the World Bank.

Last year, Orban decided not to renew the IMF deal but in a spectacular policy U-turn, said in November that it would seek new IMF-EU support.

Hungary has been an EU member since 2004, but does not use the euro.

Mark Kuban Welkomes Khloe and Lamar to Dallas; DASH, Rob Kardashian to Follow?

While Kobe Bryant laments the loss of a key Lakers teammate, both Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian are being welcomed enthusiastically by members of the Dallas Mavericks organization.

First, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told the press that Khloe was his favorite Kardashian. Now, former Dancing with the Stars contestant/team owner Mark Cuban has come out and told Extra:

"She's welcome with open arms. We can't wait to have the whole family, can't wait to have Khloe and Lamar, we'll go from there."

Dallas Bound

And it sounds like the team will have more family members to welcome soon. Odom told Us Weekly that Rob Kardashian will soon join him and Khloe in Dallas, while various sources report the Kardashians are psyched about the trade because it allows them to expand their DASH franchise to a new city.

We'll give NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki the final word on the trade for now:

"[Odom] can bring the ball up, he can shoot, he can post. He's a great decision-maker with the ball and one of the best passing big men in the league today. So, we should be able to have fun with each other."

StumbleUpon overhaul opens more avenues to explore (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? StumbleUpon is adding more avenues to meander through its online content recommendation service.

The renovations, unveiled late Monday as part of a major overhaul, allow StumbleUpon's 20 million users to be more specific about their interests so they won't have to wait as long for the service's technology to figure it out.

For example, users can now tell StumbleUpon to feed them information about specific brands, such as Audi, instead of a general topic such as cars or ask to be steered to the best material from a particular website, such as FunnyorDie.com.

More than 250 brands, actors and sports figures have set up channels under StumbleUpon's new format. Besides Audi and FunnyorDie.com, StumbleUpon's initial channel line-up includes AOL Inc., Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN, Tom Hanks and Magic Johnson.

StumbleUpon also has added an "explore" option designed to make it easier to find content with a quick search.

The organizational tools bring a greater sense of direction to StumbleUpon, whose appeal has been tied to its random qualities. The free service, which makes it money from selling ads, got its name from its penchant for leading users down online corridors that they didn't even know existed.

"People are still going to experience serendipity and surprise on StumbleUpon, but they now they are going to have more control," said StumbleUpon CEO and co-founder Garrett Camp.

To herald the shift, StumbleUpon redesigned its logo. The most glaring change is the logo's color, now reddish-orange instead of blue and green.

The paint job comes nearly a decade after Camp and some friends started StumbleUpon in Canada before eventually moving to Silicon Valley in 2006. That led to StumbleUpon's sale in 2007 to eBay Inc. for $75 million. Camp regretted the decision and teamed up with several venture capitalists to buy back StumbleUpon from eBay for an undisclosed amount in 2009.

Since then, StumbleUpon's audience has tripled, helping the service emerge as one of the Web's largest catalysts for driving traffic to other sites. StumbleUpon says its recommends more than 1.2 billion pieces of content per month, doubling its volume from a year ago.

Next up: an international expansion for what so far has been an English-only service. The redesign includes technological tweaks that will make it easier to translate StumbleUpon into different languages. StumbleUpon, which is based in San Francisco, expects to expand into France and several other European countries early next year.
