Press Conference and Rally Monday, July 2, 2012 at 1 p.m. Courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse 436 Grant Street in Downtown Pittsburgh
--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With Pittsburgh repeatedly suffering from unhealthy air, PennFuture will announce a new program to help area residents take action to make the region?s air cleaner and healthier at a press conference and rally at 1 p.m., Monday July 2 in the Courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse on Grant Street in Downtown Pittsburgh. Participants in the event include Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Caren Glotfelty of the Heinz Endowments and the Breathe Project, and representatives from Duquesne Light, Choose PA Wind, Community Energy, and Metro Scale Up.
The single most important thing anyone can do to cut air pollution is to change how he/she uses energy and what kind of energy she/he uses. The Summer of Energy program will provide opportunities and incentives for Pittsburgh-area families to clean up the air by switching to Pennsylvania wind energy, and will offer free and low cost help to stop wasting energy and start saving energy and money.
The topic of yoga as an Olympic sport is being discussed a lot more these days especially with London?s 2012 Games less than a month away. While many articles have written against this notion, why is there such resistance when yoga competition has been part of Indian tradition for 2000 years?
Yoga originated in India; its history spans over 5000 years. An important part of the country?s culture, it is one of the oldest holistic health systems that not only heals but exercises the physical, mental, and spiritual states.
Hatha yoga, created in the 15th C, concentrates mainly on asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath) ? 2 of yoga?s 8 limbs which are outlined by ancient sage Patanjali in Yoga Sutras. In turn, asanas have been performed in yoga competitions in India for centuries as a way to demonstrate yoga?s life renewing benefits and to inspire others in their practice. NB: India also holds pranayama competitions and philosophical competitions ? it is part of their tradition.
It?s been over the past 40 years that yoga has made its mark on the Western world, with Hatha the most popular form; more than 20 million people practice in the US. Despite this tight embrace however, discussing yoga, sport, and competition in the same sentence can have polarizing effects.
Such a difference in outlook may be due to any number of reasons: some argue that spirituality cannot be competitive; others say that their postures shouldn?t be compared to that of a fellow yogi; many ask how ?breath? can be judged. Could it be that we?re getting caught up in a definition of ?competition?, and not associating it with the same positivity with which it is viewed in Indian culture?
The Indian mentality towards yoga competitions is that the competitor focuses internally. Rajashree Choudhury, founder of the International Yoga Sports Federation (IYSF) and USA Yoga, a non-profit organization formed with the aim to develop Yoga Asana as an (Olympic) sport, highlights the importance of this intrinsic quality:
?When you practice you always strive to be better. You don?t practice for the sake of it; you want to get the most out of it. To get the most means you have to challenge yourself, which means competition. Yoga competition means healthy competition. And, if you lose that empowered feeling (of the challenge), then you?re not looking at getting more from life. The life is there, but the energy is missing.?
She goes on to say that ?everyone can practice sports for recreation, or if they want ? competition performance.? Just as an amateur tennis players can watch and be inspired by a Wimbledon champion, so can a yogi watch and be inspired by the athleticism and grace of a yoga champion.
Rajashree can speak from experience. A champion in her youth, she recalls not even wanting to take part in her first yoga competition at age 9 - she had always been more interested in track and field but at the urging of her parents, she practiced yoga. When it came time to demonstrate her postures on stage, she gave 100% of her heart and soul, just as she does with everything in her life. She remembers being shocked when proclaimed the winner.
Inspired by the practices of the senior students, she went on to win consecutive annual competitions. Over time, she learned the fundamental goal of yoga: to strive for self acceptance and inner growth. Rajashree has dedicated her whole life to yoga, and knows firsthand that it can change a life. As she declares, ?I would not be involved in yoga if I didn?t do competition.?
In a letter to the IYSF in reference to the All Indian National Yoga Championship held in April, 2012, B.K.S. Iyengar ? founder of Iyengar yoga and author of the popular book, Light on Yoga, wrote:
?Out of the 8 petals (limbs) of yoga, the only petal that is exhibitive is the yoga-asana-s where as the other petals are very individual and personal. As such there is nothing wrong in holding a competition on the qualitative presentation of the yoga-asanas? The presentation must be very natural with innocence and humility rather than pride and arrogance. Then I consider such competitions as healthy. It should be competition on the artistic level and not on egoistic body cult.?
The IYSF presented its 9th Annual International Yoga Asana Championship this past June in the US. Comprised of youth and adult divisions, it is an invitational championship based on those who placed at the top in affiliated national and regional championships - open to any yoga school or style of yoga. Each competitor trains for months; practicing daily for hours, regulating the food, rest and exercise regime, and coached to deliver a smooth and well documented 3 minute presentation of 7 asanas.
Its rules and competitive structure follow the Hatha yoga tradition; championship judges are educated by their Indian Federation counterparts on how to award marks for balance, strength, flexibility, well-paced timing, and appropriate breathing in postures. In turn, points can be deducted for instability, lack of proper alignment, forced or uneven breathing, falling out of a posture, etc. Essentially, a competitor aims to demonstrate postures with grace and ease.?
Melanie Simmons, who has been studying yoga for over 11 years and received her Yoga Siromani (teacher of yoga) from the Sivananda Vedanta Ashram, represented the state of Indiana twice at the National Yoga Asana Championship in LA. She describes the experience as life changing. ?I had selfless, giving teachers who spent lots of time and energy training our group. I found out I was a dedicated student with a real passion to learn and grow. I watched not only myself but my fellow students grow in confidence as they passed boundaries that being a part of this event requires. And, that is really yoga: learning and growing in awareness and knowledge of the self,? she explains.
As a testament to the benefits of yoga championships, the winners travel the world to share their knowledge of yoga and serve as role models for its practice. Joseph Encinia struggled with rheumatoid arthritis, a heart attack, and his weight from an early age. The discovery of yoga in 2005 transformed his life; after years of dedication he won the 2009 and 2010 National USA Yoga Asana Championships. In 2011, he was named national and international champion. Encinia now teaches yoga full time, and is vested in sharing competitive yoga with others.
Jessica Coulston, Bikram Yoga teacher and graduating Registered Nurse, says, ?I get a ?wow? feeling when I watch yoga champions like Brandi Lynn or Joseph Encinia do flawless, meticulous yoga poses; flowing from one movement to the next with a smooth, calm breathing technique. I don't care how many back flips you can do, or hurdles you can jump...anatomically, when one is moving slowly, with control and mindfulness, it puts the most strain and effort on the muscles versus rapid movement which is ?easier? on the muscle groups. This is why Bikram always says the slower you go, the better you do, the more strength you build.??
Getting to the Olympics is still a far off dream. Rajashree?s hope is to link together with similar organizations in other countries to qualify Yoga Asana as an Olympic sport; out of the 75 countries that are required to be voted in by the Olympic Committee, just over 20 run competitions. Says Simmons, ?If it were an Olympic sport, the coverage of yoga would be amplified and my hope is the more people who come to yoga, the more the world will grow in self awareness.?
The Games will be the ideal platform to inspire the world at large with yoga but for Rajashree, Olympic ambitions are her second goal.
Her primary objective is to introduce more children to yoga. While the practice has been embraced by baby boomers and Generation X and Y, the encouragement is now filtering down to a grassroots level. Rajashree is making inroads to educate children in public schools, ballet classes, gymnastic schools, and sports clubs about the positive effects of yoga ? this is where change will happen as children are the future.
??Kids don?t do yoga because they haven?t been motivated. You have to show them the reason and purpose of doing it. Kids have a difficult time when they go through different stages in life; I know this as I raised two kids of my own. There has to be a sport (for them), there has to be a purpose ? if they take yoga as a sport, they can constantly improve. ? She also mentions that cultivating a yoga practice will help a child?s performance not only in life, but in other athletic pursuits.
In terms of encouraging the Western public?s acceptance of Yoga Asana as an Olympics qualifier, Rajashree knows it will take time but remains optimistic, ?Now is the time as we can see that yoga is a celebration of the way of life? People love sports. Sports bring communities together; sports bring the spirit? Come and watch a yoga competition if you have your doubts.?
To see an upcoming live competition, the Texas Regional Yoga Asana Championship will take place on August 12th, followed by PA &NJ on September 30th, and North Carolina on November 4th.?

Seth MacFarlane?said that the papers belonging to the astronomer and popularizer of science Carl Sagan were extremely influential to him, and that they should be accessible to everyone.

Seth MacFarlane once included a gag on his animated TV comedy "Family Guy" about an "edited for rednecks" version of Carl Sagan's "Cosmos," featuring an animated Sagan dubbed over to say that the earth is "hundreds and hundreds" of years old.?
The Library of Congress announced Wednesday that, thanks to MacFarlane's generosity, it has acquired the personal papers of the late scientist and astronomer, who spoke to mass audiences about the mysteries of the universe and the origins of life. While MacFarlane never owned Sagan's papers, he covered the undisclosed costs of donating them to the library.
"All I did was write a check, but it's something that was, to me, worth every penny," MacFarlane told The Associated Press by phone from Los Angeles. "He's a man whose life's work should be accessible to everybody."
MacFarlane ? creator of "Family Guy," ''American Dad!" and "The Cleveland Show" ? met Sagan's widow and collaborator, Ann Druyan, at an event a few years ago that brought together Hollywood screenwriters and directors with scientists. They agreed to collaborate on a follow-up to "Cosmos," Sagan's acclaimed 1980 miniseries, with MacFarlane serving as producer. Astrophysicst Neil deGrasse Tyson will host the series, which is scheduled to begin production this fall.
MacFarlane said he watched "Cosmos" as a child and devoured all of Sagan's books.
"He was an enormous and profound influence in my life," MacFarlane said. "He played an essential role ? some would say the only role at the time ? in bridging the gap between the academic community and the general public."
A planetary astronomer and passionate advocate for science, Sagan contributed to a variety of NASA projects and conducted research on the possibilities of extraterrestrial life. He also studied climate change and the "nuclear winter" that could result from a nuclear war. He died in 1996 at age 62.
The papers ? contained in more than 800 filing-cabinet drawers ? include correspondence with other scientists, drafts of Sagan's academic articles and screenplay drafts for the movie "Contact," which was based on Sagan's novel. Also part of the collection: his grade-school report cards and a drawing he made as a child about the future of space exploration.
Druyan said Sagan would have been thrilled to see his life's work made available to the public.
"He was a citizen scientist," Druyan said by phone from her Ithaca, N.Y., home. "He really believed that science belonged to everyone, all of us. He was a 'small-d' democrat in the truest sense of the word."
The donation is part of a busy week for MacFarlane, whose first live-action film, "Ted," hits theaters Friday. While he's known more for crude humor than his interest in science, he hopes to push for a renewed commitment to space exploration. Although he's a liberal Democrat, he was impressed by Newt Gingrich's recent comments about establishing a colony on the moon.
"In the late '60s, they just assumed that would be a given, that things would continue to progress and that the space program would continue to evolve, and it was a no-brainer that we would have a presence on the moon by 2000," MacFarlane said. "We're so far away from that, and it should be embarrassing."

However a family portrait is only a good thing if it comes out well, and many people are horrified at the idea of a family portrait precisely because they are concerned about something that looks awkward and cheesy, or about looking bad in the photos. To get a great family portrait you need to spend time planning what you want it to look like and you need to make sure that you have prepared yourself for the picture. At the same time you also need to think about how you are going to pose and the positions you want everyone in. This is something that the photographer will talk through with you, but it certainly helps to know what looks good for you and the kind of position you want. Here are some pointers to help your picture come out looking great. Look at Other Portraits First of all you need to think about how you want the portrait to look in terms of your positions and in terms of your surroundings. This is what will set the tone of the image and have the biggest impact on the eventual outcome. When doing this you need then to make sure that you look at some other portraits for ideas. You can do this in Google images, or by asking a friend, and that way you can present to your photographer an approximation of what you want. Have a Trial Run Having a trial run where you take your family portrait yourself with a digital camera is a very good idea to help you choose what to wear and how to look. You might do your makeup in a certain way, or you might do your hair a certain way, and find that although it looks great in person, it doesn't translate well to film. This way you can experiment ready for the day. Coordinate At the same time you need to consider what other people are wearing when you consider your outfit. If you wear something that you think looks good without first consulting the rest of the family, then you can end up looking very odd indeed and you can end up with a picture where everyone looks casual and you're in a ball gown, or where everyone is in a completely different outfit. Work together on this one and try to coordinate colors too (though not too much which is creepy...). Practice Expressions As well as doing your dress rehearsal you should also practice trying out different expressions which will allow you to ensure you have your most photogenic face on on the day. Some tips are to find your best side, and to angle your head in a way that keeps your jaw defined.

Yesterday, Twitter feeds, Tumblrs, and everything in between went into a frenzy over what everyone was calling "Back to the Future" Day. The idea was that yesterday, June 27, 2012, was the date Marty McFly traveled to in "Back to the Future Part 2." There was even a widely shared screenshot to prove it. People [...]
Omar Vizquel has hinted at the likelihood several times, but he made it clear today that this is his final season in the majors.
NESN has the translated quotes:
?This will be my last year,? Vizquel said in Spanish. ?I?ve enjoyed this game a lot, but I think it?s time to pursue a new career as a coach or manager, and hopefully I?ll get that opportunity in the future.?
Vizquel said his initial plan is to coach in Venezuela this winter and that he eventually hopes to be a major league manager.
As has been clear for some time, Vizquel will fall short of 3,000 career hits; he?s at 2,854 right now. Still, whether one believes he belongs in the Hall of Fame or not, he has had an incredible career. When he arrived at age 22, he was such a weak hitter that most were skeptical he?d last as a regular. Instead, he turned himself into an All-Star in his 30s and then, through remarkable fitness, remained a viable shortstop into his 40s.
Vizquel will retire as an 11-time Gold Glover and the all-time leader in career games at shortstop. He ranks second among active players in hits, seventh in runs scored and fifth in steals.
During the early years of online marketing, just the fact that you had more know-how than others made it possible for you to make money on the web. Marketers who blazed the trail in employing autoresponders and Google Adwords were in a good position to be successful financially since they had very few competitors. The world of online marketing has evolved substantially since that time and it is more important than ever to build good relationships with new and present customers. In this article we are going to look at the various areas where relationship marketing is essential and how to use it to grow your business.
E-mail marketing is not the top method of connecting with customers anymore; still you should definitely take it into consideration when developing a business on the Internet. Building a list is not aimed at quickly growing your subscriber list anymore. It is a fact that anyone who joins your list will also be on many other lists and the aim for you is to make certain your emails are the ones that get read. You know open rates have undoubtedly decreased recently, so your subscribers must see you as a person whose messages are believed to be too important to overlook. In life, if you givea lot you typically get a whole lot back. If you deliver value and information at no cost you will find that customers are more open to buying from you when you begin to make referrals to them.
As a result, if marketing via email is still thought to be a crucial part of the marketing process, we need to admit that social media has added a new dimension to relationship marketing. It is a fact that websites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn play a vital role in the lives of many people and discussions transpire that can improve or damage a business online. Internet marketers can benefit from being active on these websites if they interact positively with people. People are more likely to check out your site or sign up for your email list if they have a positive experience with you on these websites. This is the goal as then you can turn visitors into buyers through your email correspondence or onsite marketing.
If you develop your knowledge of these social websites, you can quickly build a loyal following by the way you build relationships. There are many examples of online marketers who approach this in the right way and you can model their success by seeing how they make use of these websites. As with every marketing online, if you learn from individuals who are already successful in an area, you can avoid some of the mistakes that can be tough to repair.
Relationship marketing certainly is the way to go on the net and you can expect to experience a better degree of success if you offer value and demonstrate ethics in your initiatives.
During early many years of advertising online, simply just because you received much more practical knowledge than other people made it possible for people to generate income for the web. Marketers who blazed a trail in making use of autoresponders and Google Adwords ended up in a beneficial place to achieve success financially given that they experienced very few competitors.
ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? An international team including scientists from the University of Saskatchewan-Saskatoon Health Region and University of British Columbia, with the help of Saskatchewan Mennonite families, has identified an abnormal gene which leads to Parkinson's disease.
"This discovery paves the way for further research to determine the nature of brain abnormalities which this gene defect produces," says Dr. Ali Rajput, a world expert in Parkinson's disease who has been studying the disease for 45 years and working with the main family in the study since 1983.
"It also promises to help us find ways to detect Parkinson's disease early, and to develop drugs which will one day halt the progression of the disease."
The abnormal gene is a mutated version of a gene called DNAJC13, identified by UBC medical genetics professor Matthew Farrer, who led the study.
Thirteen of 57 members of one extended Saskatchewan family in the study had been previously diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Three other single cases from Saskatchewan and one family from British Columbia were also found to have the same mutation. All were of Mennonite background, a Christian group who share Dutch-German-Russian ancestry.
The findings were presented last week to the more than 5,000 delegates at the 16th International Congress of Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders in Dublin, Ireland.
Rajput and his son, fellow neurologist and researcher Alex Rajput, are long-time collaborators of Farrer. The research drew on the Rajputs' work over the past four decades. The research team also includes scientists from McGill University, the Mayo Clinic in Florida, and St. Olav's Hospital in Norway.
A key contribution is the Rajputs' collection of more than 500 brains and nearly 2,200 blood samples from Parkinson's patients. Farrer explains that confirmation of the gene's linkage with Parkinson's disease required DNA samples from thousands of patients with the disease and healthy individuals. He adds that the contributions of the Saskatchewan Mennonite family, who have asked to remain anonymous, were critical.
"A breakthrough like this would not be possible without their involvement and support. They gave up considerable time, contributed clinical information, donated blood samples, participated in PET imaging studies and -- on more than one occasion following the death of a family member -- donated brain samples," says Farrer, who holds the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Neurogenetics and Translational Neuroscience.
"The whole-hearted and unselfish commitment of this family is remarkable," Rajput says. "They went out of their way in every conceivable manner to help solve this mystery. We, on behalf of all the Parkinson's disease patients in this province, Canada, and around the world, are grateful to them for making this discovery possible."
In a Parkinson's patient, cells in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra (black substance) die and there are abnormal, round clumps of protein known as Lewy bodies inside the brain cells. Examination of the brains from the Mennonite family revealed the same Lewy body Parkinson's disease as seen in other patients.
Parkinson's disease is a progressive condition that causes symptoms such as tremors, slowness of movement, stiffness, and mental impairment. In most cases, symptoms appear after age 40. It is estimated that about one million people in North America and more than four million people worldwide are affected by the disease.

While women were banned as both competitors and spectators at the ancient Olympics, the history of women?s athletics is just as old and auspicious. The Heraean Games (named after the godess Hera) were the first recorded and officially sanctioned women?s athletic event. It is thought they were held at the same time of year as the men?s Olympics. Winners were also awarded a crown of olive leaves.
The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
"The founder, Pierre de Coubertin, was dead against women's participation," says Pirkko Markula, a professor in socio-cultural studies of physical activity at the University of Alberta and author of "Olympic Women and the Media: International?Perspectives."
Women did not compete until four years later. At the 1900 Paris Games, women entered yachting, equestrian, croquet, tennis, and golf competitions. By 1912, women were also allowed to compete in swimming, and in 1928 women competed in track in field for the first time.
At the 2012 games in London, women?s boxing will be an Olympic sport for the first time. Adding women?s boxing to the Olympic program means there is no longer any sport that does not include women. Here's our list of the 15 biggest moments for women in Olympic history.

1. The Magnificent 7
The US women?s gymnastics team won the gold medal in the Women?s Team Competition for the first time at the 1996 games in Atlanta.
The team was packed with all-stars, and the competition full of dramatic moments. It was an epic win for the United States, considering the former Soviet Union had won the event in every Olympics it had entered since the 1950s. The US beat both the Russians and the Romanians, who were the reigning World Champions that year.
The most memorable moment of the competition, and perhaps the Atlanta Games overall, was when Kerri Strug fell during her first vault attempt and injured her ankle. With a sprained ankle, she vaulted a second time and stuck her landing on one leg. She smiled and then collapsed.
"Kerri Strug is definitely remembered because of the pain and injury and debates of whether such sacrifice was good," says Professor Markula.
The team also included Shannon Miller, who won the gold medal on the balance beam, earning the US only its third-ever individual gold medal in women?s gymnastics.
Team member Dominique Dawes also took home an individual medal, the bronze in floor exercise, making her the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic medal in gymnastics. With the team win, Dawes became the first black person of any nationality or gender to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics.
The other members of the US team were Dominique Moceanu, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden, and Jaycie Phelps.

World experts meet in Edinburgh to consider how life experiences impact on our genesPublic release date: 25-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Press Office Pressoffice@esrc.ac.uk Economic & Social Research Council
World experts from the fields of social, biological and medical science will today (Monday 25 June 2012) gather in Edinburgh to discuss how they can cooperate to improve our understanding of the way behaviours and life experiences can influence how our genetic inheritance is expressed (epigenetics). This collaboration will also help contribute to understanding the implications epigenetic changes have for such key social policy issues as parenting, poverty, obesity and health.
The symposium is organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in collaboration with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum, and hosted at Edinburgh's City Chambers. Entitled Social science and epigenetics: opportunities and challenges, the symposium will seek to examine how multidisciplinary research into epigenetics the science of the lasting marks that modify the expression of the genes encoded in our DNA might help provide answers to societal concerns including why deprivation has such a marked impact on child development and on health outcomes.
Epigenetics (literally 'above the gene') is a recent scientific development that examines how particular mechanisms can influence whether certain genes are turned off, turned on, or modify a gene's level of activity. Our genome includes both our DNA and chromatin that binds everything together. Research into epigenetics has revealed that even though a person's DNA is not altered, lasting 'marks' on the DNA or the chromatin structure alter the extent to which each gene is expressed to produce the proteins that are the essential building blocks of life. Emerging research shows that factors such as poverty, parenting, stress and diet can impact how someone's genes are expressed, and this can remain "hard wired", with certain of these lasting epigenetic marks even being passed from parents to children.
Speaking as the epigenetic symposium commenced Professor John Hobcraft of the University of York, the lead scientific organiser of the Symposium, said: "Research is beginning to indicate how environmental and social factors are linked to a series of epigenetic changes, sometimes across quite broad areas of the genome. Factors such as the way in which parents bring up their offspring (parenting, diet, cognitive inputs) or experience of social disadvantages seem to have implications for how genes manifest themselves in later life."
"By bringing together experts from biological, medical and social sciences, this symposium will help determine how we can best work co-operatively to address 'grand challenge' research questions on the links between the social sciences and epigenetics and the pathways and mechanisms involved. Further progress in understanding the consequences of these epigenetic changes, and their potential reversibility for later in life, has the potential to bring benefits to individuals and society as a whole."
Commenting on the significance of the symposium to Scotland Professor Steve Yearley, Director of the Edinburgh-based ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum, said: "Scotland has long been at the forefront of life-sciences and social science research. It is therefore fitting that such a high-profile event, bringing together a diverse group of international experts to determine the opportunities and challenges research into epigenetics presents for the world, should be hosted in Scotland."
"Equally, recent scientific studies have indicated that some of the problems Scotland continues to experience in relation to poor health despite efforts by policy-makers to address these may actually be linked to epigenetic changes resulting from social deprivation. This may partly underlie the so-called 'Glasgow effect'".

1. The ESRC International Scientific Symposium: Social science and epigenetic: opportunities and challenges will take place at Edinburgh City Chambers, 25-26 June 2012. It will bring together expert social, biological and medical scientists to take forward thinking and explore the opportunities for promoting co-operation and collaboration between scientists and social scientists in the field of epigenetics
2. The symposium is being organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) with support from the Genomics Forum, and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
3. As set out in a Scottish Government study reported in 2010, the link between socio-economic circumstances and health is well know, and there is an increasing evidence base supporting the hypothesis of a 'Scottish Effect', and more specifically a 'Glasgow Effect', the terminology used to identify higher levels of mortality and poor health found in Scotland and Glasgow beyond that explained by socio-economic circumstances. Subsequent research undertaken at the University of Glasgow has indicated that such health inequalities may be due, at least in part, to epigenetic effects resulting from socio-economic circumstances - http://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-01-health-inequalities-imprinted-dna.html
4. The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues. It supports independent, high quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and the third sector. The ESRC's total budget for 2012/13 is 205 million. At any one time the ESRC supports over 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students in academic institutions and independent research institutes.
5. The ESRC Genomics Forum has a commitment to promote social research on the contemporary life sciences around issues including designer babies, synthetic blood, DNA profiling, identity politics, personalised medicine, stem cell research and synthetic biology. Creative engagements form a valuable part of this work helping to reach new audiences. Based at the University of Edinburgh, the Forum runs a programme of national and international activities to draw natural and social scientists, policy makers, regulators, civil society and business into an ongoing dialogue about the relationship between genomics and society. The Forum is part of the ESRC Genomics Network.
6. The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) invests in world-class bioscience research and training on behalf of the UK public. Our aim is to further scientific knowledge to promote economic growth, wealth and job creation and to improve quality of life in the UK and beyond. Funded by Government, and with an annual budget of around 445M (2011-2012), we support research and training in universities and strategically funded institutes. BBSRC research and the people we fund are helping society to meet major challenges, including food security, green energy and healthier, longer lives. Our investments underpin important UK economic sectors, such as farming, food, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. World experts meet in Edinburgh to consider how life experiences impact on our genesPublic release date: 25-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
