Humane society donations shock employees - WSFA.com: News ...

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Getting the mail is a little more exciting for Lea Turbert at the Montgomery Humane Society.

"Some of these are bills, but a lot of donations. So yes, we've had a very good day. This is a very very good day."

$8,000 dollars in donations in less than 24 hours.

"The outpour...it floors me. It's amazing," says Montgomery Humane Society Executive Director, Steven Tears.

$200 dollars?came?from?Hal Walker.

"I just thought I'd help out a little bit."

$150 came from Charlie Reynolds and his co-workers.

"We have a lot of people in this community who are concerned about animals."

People donated?dog food and pet supplies, too.

"We just couldn't thank everyone enough," says Tears.

Directors hope the donations go a long way to making a dent in the shortfall and reducing anxiety, too."

"Where we're able to not relax a little bit, but where we're able to have a little bit of breathing room rather than going day to day, month to month, check to check," says Tears.

Tears says the humane society was forced to ask the county commission for $50,000 dollars to make ends meet or else they wouldn't even be able to make payroll.

But thanks to help from the community, hope is in sight.

"That the donations will continue to come and we'll be able to raise our budget a little bit," says Tears.

The Montgomery County Commission is expected to unanimously approve giving the humane society $50-thousand dollars.
