CHANDLER, AZ, Mar 21, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) ?
What:
According to the National Golf Foundation, the average
golfer typically plays approximately 37 rounds per year and spends
many more days practicing, so it is not surprising that the rate of
injuries is on the rise. One recent study showed that during a two
year period, 60 percent of golf professionals and 40 percent of
amateurs suffered either a traumatic or over use injury while
golfing.

The increasing number of injuries requires greater expertise and
attention to the needs of golfers at all levels of play. To provide
health and fitness professionals with the knowledge and skills to
help clients improve overall golf performance and address injuries,
the National Academy of Sports Medicine released its NASM Golf
Fitness Specialist (GFS) course and credential. Different from other
programs, the NASM GFS focuses on helping improve golf performance
through five different areas of exercise and fitness training.

Who:
PGA Tour Trainer Sean Cochran helped craft the Golf Fitness
Specialist credential, along with other golf training professionals
and NASM. Cochran is a well-known and respected golf fitness
instructor who has worked for professional golfers like Phil
Mickelson and Cory Pavin. He has brought expertise to both amateur
and professional golfers during his 10-year career. Cochran also has
produced golf fitness videos and authored various articles and books.

NASM will host a free webinar on March 29 for those interested in
learning more about the Golf Fitness Specialist credential.

Quotes:
?I have found the science-based curriculums, accreditation
courses, and continuing education programs from the National Academy
of Sports Medicine to be the gold standard in the health and fitness
industry. As a professional strength and conditioning coach in the
sport of golf and previously in professional baseball, I strongly
recommend the programming available through the NASM to any
individual in the industry who is looking to advance their
credentialing and careers,? said Sean Cochran, strength and
conditioning coach for professional golfers.

?In partnership with industry leading trainers like Sean Cochran,
NASM has certified 17,000 health and fitness professionals in
personal training, corrective exercise, fitness nutrition, and sports
performance annually. Adding to the list of specialties for NASM is
the new specialized credential to improve golf performance through
custom fitness and exercise training. Our evidence-based, online
education program provides an ideal platform for health and fitness
professionals to grow their skillset, expertise and business,? said
Andrew Wyant, president and general manager of NASM.
