FVCC to Offer New Course on Risk Management and Insurance this ...

Flathead Valley Community College will offer a new course on financial risk management and insurance beginning this fall.? The course, titled Fundamentals of Risk Management and Insurance, will help students analyze individual and business risks as well as provide an understanding of the foundations, applications and selection of insurance.

Instructed by Janet Novotny, the course will benefit business students as well as business owners and consumers.? Novotny taught a similar course throughout her previous 18-year career as an instructor at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark.? She says she has been proud to hear how many of her students benefited from the course, often crediting what they learned in the course for guiding them in making solid business decisions with limited risk.

?My students not only learned how to deal with insurance challenges in their personal life, several of them went on to obtain successful careers all over the world in the insurance field, even though they had no idea what types of careers they would pursue at the time they took the course ,? she said.

Novotny also brings experience as a commercial lines insurance agent for an independent insurance agency where she represented several companies such as Allstate, Travelers, Progressive, and Aetna.? She worked with commercial clients and the companies that insured them and also helped with personal lines insurance such as automobile and home insurance.? As a former co-owner of a commercial and residential construction business and former owner of a strip mall and several rentals, she will bring a wealth of knowledge to the class from having dealt with insurance on a daily basis.

Topics to be covered include life insurance, health insurance, property and liability insurance, social insurance (FICA, MEDICARE, MEDICAID), employee benefits, and retirement benefits.? The course also will explore recent updates and changes in the rapidly evolving insurance industry, how to avoid risk with the least amount of money, and realizing risks in life and in business.

Fall semester courses at FVCC begin August 27.? To learn more or to register for the course, contact the college Registration Office at 756-3848, or visit www.fvcc.edu.
