Police develop person of interest in string of church burglaries

Police investigators have developed a "person of interest" in a series of church burglaries that occurred last week in Cowley County, a Winfield official said Tuesday.

The person the police are looking at has not yet been picked up or interviewed, Winfield Police Chief Danny Parker said.

He is from the Cowley County area, Parker added.

Four churches were burglarized:

? Hillcrest Bible Baptist Church, 2440 N. Summit St., in Arkansas City;

? Nazarene Church, 201 E. 19th Ave., in Winfield;

? Trinity Lutheran Church, 910 Mound St., in Winfield;

? First Christian Church, 904 Alexander St., in Winfield.

The three burglaries in Winfield might be linked, Parker said.

"There are common factors," the chief said. "We are following up. If we can link them together, we will do so."

Parker declined to specify the common factors in the burglaries.

"We'll wait for that, and talk to this person of interest," he said.

He said the Winfield Police Department was working with other law enforcement agencies, including the Arkansas City Police Department.

Ark City Police Chief Sean Wallace was not available for comment early Tuesday afternoon.
