PFT: Eagles owner says Reid's job on line this year

nfl_a_raymond_james_b1_576AP

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to struggle to sell tickets, and it?s gotten so bad that it?s time to address the question of whether the market still merits having an NFL franchise.

With their regular-season home opener only nine days away, the Buccaneers remain 9,000 short of the goal for lifting the local blackout.

The gap, reported by Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, must be closed within 72 hours of kickoff, or the game won?t be televised in the team?s home market.

The failure to sell enough tickets at the stadium comes despite a string of efforts to sell all non-premium seats, from taking full advantage of the new league rule that allows teams to cut their ?manifest? to 85 percent, to uncharacteristically spending million on free agents like Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, and Eric Wright, to hiring a new coach, to cutting the prices on parking and concessions for the home opener, to honoring Ronde Barber.

By the way, it?s the first freaking game of the year.? And Cam Newton is coming to town.? Division rival.? The team that once claimed Chris Simms? spleen.

It was supposed to be a slam dunk for Week One.? And still the team is 9,000 tickets short.

Look, we like Tampa.? The city did a great job hosting the Super Bowl.? But regardless of the reason ? local economy, apathy, whatever ? if fans continue to fail to show up for the games, at some point the team needs to be moved to a place where the fans have the money, the time, and the inclination to attend games.

The Glazers get blamed for plenty of things.? They bear no blame here.? The Glazers have tried to improve the team and to make it more attractive to attend games.? Eventually, the people need to respond.

There?s no indication that the Glazers are looking to move the team.? Given the manner in which the community continues to respond to the franchise, they?d be crazy if they weren?t exploring their options.

Windows Phone 8 Might Be the Winner Microsoft Hopes For: 10 Reasons Why

Microsoft?s Windows Phone 8 was announced back in June and immediately made an impression. The operating system, which will launch later this year, comes with a host of improvements, including a better Start screen, near-field communication support and new mapping features that are designed to help folks not only find out where they?re going, but also locate points of interest.
Microsoft expects Windows Phone 8 to perform even better on the market than its predecessor. Of course, that?s not all that difficult. Customers who found more to like in Apple?s iPhone and Android largely ignored Windows Phone 7. Windows Phone 8, therefore, has put Microsoft at a crossroads. Either the operating system will drive Microsoft to success or push it even farther down the mobile ladder.

So far, it appears that Windows Phone 8 might just help Microsoft achieve success. The operating system is by no means perfect and it too early to tell how well Windows 8 devices will actually sell, but as of this writing, it appears to be a winner.

Read on to find out why Windows Phone 8 could be a success when it launches later this year.

1. The home page is a great improvement

Microsoft delivered a new Start screen with Windows Phone 8 that allows for easy control of tiles and the ability to see more information in the opening pane. With the new addition, it should make it much easier for users to navigate and find information.

2. Vendors are lining up

Vendors are quite happy to jump on the Windows Phone 8 bandwagon. At IFA in Berlin, Samsung announced its first Windows Phone 8 device. Nokia is expected to offer up its own handsets running the operating system next week. Others will follow soon. Vendors are lining up to get their hands on Windows Phone 8.

3. The Samsung case will help

Apple?s victory over Samsung could be a boon for Windows Phone 8. The victory could make Samsung warm a bit more to Microsoft and Windows Phone and prompt other Android vendors to at least consider the Microsoft?s mobile OS to hedge their market bets. Believe it or not, Microsoft might prove to be the largest benefactor of Apple?s $1.05 billion victory over Samsung.

4. Nokia is still a threat

Nokia might be down, but it?s definitely not out. And the company?s brand is still valued quite highly among consumers in emerging markets. Considering that Nokia and Microsoft are bedfellows with Windows Phone, it?s possible that the company?s handsets could help Windows Phone 8.

5. Microsoft?s control is important

Microsoft has made the smart decision, like Apple, to fully control the design of its operating system. By doing so, it curtails the varied experiences customers get in the Android ecosystem where multiple editions of operating system run concurrently on different phone models. It also allows Microsoft to maintain stronger security, since it controls the code. It?s a smart idea.

6. The designs look solid

When it comes to design, both Microsoft and its vendor partners appear to be spot-on. The operating system is well-built, easy to navigate and seems to anticipate user demands. Samsung?s Windows Phone 8-based device, the ATIV S, is downright beautiful. It?s nice to see Microsoft and its vendors partners actually go for strong design for once.

7. The apps are coming

Although Microsoft got off to a late start with mobile apps, the company has quickly made some inroads. As more people buy Windows Phone, there?ll be a much better chance of its platform catching up to Google Play and Apple?s App Store. It?s not always considered, but apps and the growth of application marketplaces is extremely important.

8. It?s nice to see new mapping

Microsoft?s new mapping features in Windows Phone 8 could very well be its best addition. Thanks to help from Nokia?s mapping services, the operating system will now offer built-in turn-by-turn navigation in many countries, more detailed maps, and the ability to store those maps offline. In some ways Windows Phone 8?s mapping is better than anything Apple or Google are offering in their own operating systems.

9. A similar view across operating systems

Microsoft has made the smart decision to deliver a very similar experience across Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. By doing so, it might be able to attract more Windows 8 customers to its mobile operating system, since they?ll feel right at home with its design. Windows 8 might just be the Trojan horse Microsoft is counting on?and everyone is forgetting about.

10. Strong NFC integration

The future of the mobile market resides with near-field communication. That technology, which allows for mobile products to wireless communicate with other devices, is a key component in Windows Phone 8. According to Microsoft, users will be able to make mobile payments and use the NFC features built into its operating system for a host of other uses. It?ll be a nice addition.

Facebook co-founder sells 450,000 shares

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz is shedding another 450,000 company shares for a take of about $8.7 million.

Moskovitz has been selling 150,000 shares a day and disclosing the sales every three days. Including the most recent sale, he still holds more than 130 million shares.

The latest filing, made late Wednesday, covered sales from Monday to Wednesday. He sold shares at prices ranging from $19 to $19.49.

Shares of Facebook Inc., based in Menlo Park, Calif., have been in steep decline since debuting at $38 each in May. Shares hit a new low last week and haven't traded above $20 in two weeks.

Moskovitz, 28, was Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard roommate when they founded Facebook in 2004. He left in 2008 and started the software company Asana.

Five Ways to Prepare Your Home-Based Business for a Power Outage

If you work from home, you?re in good company. A recent survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that one in five employed Americans do some or all their work at home. And a report by consultant IDC said that the number of home-based businesses and telecommuters will increase by more than 10% over the next four years.

For the increasing number of us who work at home, a power outage isn?t an inconvenience; it?s a threat to our livelihoods. With that in mind, here are five things you can do to help prepare your business for a power outage.

1. Back up Your Data Regularly
Can your home-based business survive the loss of critical files? If you lose power, you?re just a hard disk crash away from disaster. Protecting yourself is easy. You should regularly back up all important data to an external drive, NAS (network-attached storage) device, or on-line. There?s a strong argument for double back ups ? redundancy as additional insurance. And, of course, one set

How frequently should you back up? It depends on how much data you can afford to lose. Some data-driven businesses back up in real time. Others schedule automatic back ups at the EOD (end of day). Some just perform a back up every Friday or every month of back up data needs to be stored off-site or online.

2. Protect Your Electronics
A power outage ? think lightning, downed power lines, distribution issues ? is the most likely time for transient voltage, the spikes and surges that can fry or damage voltage-sensitive electronics. You really do need surge suppressors.

3. Prepare an Emergency Storm Kit
Think ahead and prepare for a power outage by packing a plastic bucket with all those ?I wish I had? items before the power goes out. Think flashlights, batteries and a first aid kit. You?ll also want protective gear like raincoats, gloves and goggles in case you need to remove debris. Large plastic freezer bags will keep important documents (including phone numbers and insurance info) dry. And a disposable camera can document damages for an insurance claim even if your cell phone is out of juice. Speaking of phones, consider including a land-line phone that doesn?t require power to function.

You might want big magic markers and paper or cardboard to write a note or sign. And, of course, duct tape for everything else. The bucket should have a secure lid to keep everything dry, and the bucket itself will come in handy if you need to transport water.

4. Have a Backup Power Plan
Will a portable generator be enough? Portable generators can deliver limited power for relatively short outages. But they?re well-suited for construction work, field work or recreation. A standby generator can offer a more comprehensive backup power solution for the devices your business relies on.

5. Business-Specific Requirements
How much power does your business need? That depends. A home-based tailor may only need power for a few lights and a sewing machine. A caterer with a commercial kitchen needs to refrigerate thousands of dollars of perishables. No matter your needs, a standby generator can supply power to the equipment your business relies on.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: Middle-Grade Review: Okay for Now

Okay for Now, an audio book by Gary D. Schmidt, was one of the winners of a 2012 Odyssey Honor Award for audio books.? The award was well deserved.? This was one of the best middle-grade books I have ever read (or listened to) and one of the best audio book productions I have ever listened to.? It was one of those rare books that I couldn?t wait to finish but never wanted to end.

Doug Swieteck has a rough life: his dad is abusive, his brother is a bully, and his oldest brother is off fighting in Vietnam.? To make matters worse, his father loses his job and moves the family from Long Island to ?stupid Marysville? (as Doug calls it throughout the book), a small town in the Catskills, where there is nothing going on and Doug knows no one.? Even worse, everyone in town seems to assume that Doug is a thug, like his brother.? The only things that make his life bearable are his kind mother (and especially, her smile) and Lil, who teaches him how to drink a really cold Coke and becomes his first friend in Marysville.

Doug is the most endearingly flawed but likable narrator since Tom Sawyer.? Even though it sometimes feels like the whole world is falling apart around him, Doug keeps moving forward.? He discovers the Marysville Library?s greatest treasure, John James Audubon?s Birds of America, with its amazing paintings, and he becomes the town?s new grocery delivery boy on Saturday mornings.? Little by little, he finds things to like about stupid Marysville and becomes a part of the community, but not without plenty of challenges and struggles.

I loved every minute of this audio book that had me both laughing out loud and choking back tears at various points.? It is funny and heartbreaking and heartwarming, all at once, while it recreates a period of time in small-town America that has long past.? Most of all, it is real.? Doug?s ups and downs mirror those every person encounters in real life ? setbacks alternating with moving forward, heart-renching times followed by joys.? Schmidt has created a cast of characters that you really come to care about.? I definitely want to go back and read Schmidt?s Newberry Honor novel, The Wednesday Wars, which introduced Doug for the first time.? Okay for Now is among the best that middle-grade literature has to offer.

One third less life on planet Earth? Scientists offer better estimate of living biomass

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Previous estimates about the total mass of all life on our planet have to be reduced by about one third. This is the result of a study by a German-U.S. science team published in the current online issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

According to previous estimates about one thousand billion tons of carbon are stored in living organisms, of which 30% in single-cell microbes in the ocean floor and 55 % reside in land plants. The science team around Dr. Jens Kallmeyer of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and University of Potsdam has now revised this number: Instead of 300 billion tons of carbon there are only about 4 billion tons stored in subseafloor microbes. This reduces the total amount of carbon stored in living organisms by about one third.

Previous estimates were based on drill cores that were taken close to shore or in very nutrient-rich areas. "About half of the world's ocean is extremely nutrient-poor. For the last 10 years it was already suspected that subseafloor biomass was overestimated" explains Dr. Jens Kallmeyer the motivation behind his study. "Unfortunately there were no data to prove it." Therefore Kallmeyer and his colleagues from the University of Potsdam and the University of Rhode Island, USA, collected sediment cores from areas that were far away from any coasts and islands. The six-year work showed that there were up to one hundred thousand times less cells in sediments from open-ocean areas, which are dubbed "deserts of the sea" due to their extreme nutrient depletion, than in coastal sediments.

With these new data the scientists recalculated the total biomass in marine sediments and found these new, drastically lower values.

Despite of the high logistic and financial efforts for marine drilling operations there are more data of the abundance of living biomass in the sea floor than of their abundance on land. ?Our new results show the need to re-examine the other numbers as e.g. the amount of carbon in deep sediments on land," Jens Kallmeyer states. In particular the research into the ?Deep Biosphere" is still in the fledgling stages; this is life that can be found in kilometer's depth inside Earth's crust. The new findings contribute to a better picture of the distribution of living biomass on Earth.

Forecasters predicted Isaac would intensify into a Category 1 hurricane later Monday or Tuesday with top sustained winds of between 74 and 95 mph. The center of its projected path took Isaac directly toward New Orleans on Wednesday, but hurricane warnings extended across some 330 miles from Morgan City, La., to Destin, Fla. TAMPA-BOUND

Mitt Romney will be on the way to Florida on Tuesday ? the day his wife's scheduled to give her speech at the Republican National Convention.

The presumptive GOP nominee for president will arrive in Tampa on what's effectively the first day of the convention. Although it was called to order Monday, it was immediately adjourned until Tuesday because of Tropical Storm Isaac.

___

POLLS: A TIGHTER RACE

Pre-convention polling has wrapped, and neither candidate for president begins the race to Nov. 6 with a head start.

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney begin the campaign's high season about even. Modest advantages for Obama had begun to look like the norm, but four new surveys in the last week along with Gallup's daily tracking poll found a tighter race with no discernible edge for either candidate.

An Associated Press-GfK poll puts the contest at 47 percent Obama to 46 percent for Romney among registered voters. Fox News, NBC/Wall Street Journal, Washington Post-ABC News and the Gallup tracker all report similar findings among that group.

Other common themes across this wave of polling include Obama maintaining his advantage as the more likable or empathetic candidate, while Romney continues to have his strongest performance against the president on handling the economy.

VIEWPOINTS: PROTESTS

One viewpoint, from Tampa's police chief, Jane Castor: Protesters around the GOP convention can say and do whatever they wish "as long as they don't cross the line into criminal behavior."

And another, from Cara Jennings, a voter outreach organizer from Palm Beach County, Fla.: "They've militarized Tampa."

So far, protests have been muted and only two people have been arrested. That's in stark contrast to four years ago, when hundreds of protesters were arrested at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. In Tampa, protesters, who for months planned to converge on Tampa to showcase their gripes and messages, have been peaceful and small in number.

On Tuesday, New Jersey-born tenor Philip Alongi Jr. is back in the political spotlight when he again sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" for the Republicans.

The young Alongi has performed more than a dozen operatic roles across the United States, including productions of Carmen, Madama Butterfly and La Traviata. Since his last convention appearance, Alongi has released the debut albums "Heritage," a collection of songs and arias of Italy, and "New Life: Songs of Faith," a collection of sacred works spanning eras from the 17th century to today.

NEW JUST TRY GETTING HOME

Many Republican National Convention attendees put up with delayed, diverted or canceled flights on their way to Tampa, some blamed on Tropical Storm Isaac. They can expect a bumpy ride home, too.

Airlines are already warning about the crush of passengers heading out of town at week's end. Delta Air Lines is advising travelers to arrive at Tampa International Airport at least two hours early to deal with security, crowds and assorted delays "outside of our control."

TRUMP'S TEASE

For weeks, showman Donald Trump has been doing the slow tease about his plans for the GOP convention.

He was asked to speak, he says, but decided to do something "bigger." Something "very, very major." Something "hopefully quite amazing."

Trump was in Sarasota, Fla., over the weekend to accept an award, but headed back to New York when Monday's convention activities were pared down due to Tropical Storm Isaac.

Does that mean no more surprise?

"The big surprise is still going to happen, so stay tuned," promises Trump spokesman Michael Cohen.

GOP officials are playing along. Says convention planner Russ Schriefer: "Just because he isn't here, doesn't mean he's not going to show up."

THE PRESIDENT'S PEN

His rivals may be convening in Florida this week. But at the White House, President Barack Obama is getting ready for his big moment next week ? at the Democratic National Convention.

Aides say Obama spent part of Monday working on the speech he'll deliver at his party's gathering in Charlotte, N.C. A working draft, they say, has already been developed.

DOG FIGHT

At least one Tampa, Fla., rally's gone to the dogs already.

Amid a protest objecting to the way Mitt Romney transported the family pet on a years-ago vacation ? inside an animal carrier strapped atop the car ? a woman stepped into the crowd and began loudly defending the GOP candidate.

"What Mitt Romney did to his dog, his dog liked and it was safe and enjoyable," said Barbara Seidenberg. As several canine-toting protesters tried to shout her down, she pressed on.

"Barack Obama was a 10-year-old boy when he ate dog," she said, apparently referring to a passage in one of Obama's books in which he writes about eating dog meat as a boy in Indonesia. "But he was a grown man when he decided his whole persona and his life was going to be committed to turning this country into less of a country so that ? "

She was drowned out by a protester yelling "Obama 2012!"

A shouting match ensued, and Seidenberg stormed off.

CAIN WEIGHS IN

At one point, he was a serious challenger for the GOP nomination. But Herman Cain says he's not upset about being excluded from the list of speakers at the Republican National Convention this week.

Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan helped him carve out a unique niche in the primary, with some polls showing him moving toward taking the lead in the fall. But allegations of sexual harassment derailed his candidacy.

Cain is making the rounds in Tampa. He tells CNN that he has met one-on-one with presumptive nominee Mitt Romney on at least three occasions in recent months. He says he's not upset about his lack of a speaking slot because other black Republican speakers needed the exposure more than he did.

Cain says the allegations that derailed his candidacy were part of a coordinated attack, but he didn't say whether the effort was undertaken by a particular Republican or a Democratic campaign: "I don't want to say anything that might jeopardize what we might do in the future in terms of exposing what happened."

___

ISAAC'S UGLY, BUT NO KATRINA

Isaac is sweeping up the Gulf Coast just in time for the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans.

A tropical storm expected to strengthen into a hurricane, Isaac could prove punishing. But it's nowhere near as powerful as the bruiser that struck on Aug. 29, 2005.

At one point, Katrina reached Category 5 status with winds over 157 mph. It made landfall as a Category 3 with a huge storm surge. Levee failures caused catastrophic flooding.

This time, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say the updated levees around New Orleans are equipped to handle storms stronger than Isaac. City officials had no plans to order evacuations, instead telling residents to hunker down and make do with the supplies they have.

"It's going to be all right," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

Isaac promises a soaking but not much more for Tampa, Fla., where the Republican National Convention was pushed back a day just in case.

___

SAY IT IN SONG

Why say it when you can sing it?

Most speeches at this week's Republican National Convention are set to a particular theme for the day. "We Built It," is Tuesday's mantra, a poke at Obama's "You didn't build that" line at a July campaign event.

A convention entertainer will sing about it. Guitarist Lane Turner rehearsed his tune "I Built It" in a sparsely filled convention hall Monday.

"I built it with my own two working hands," goes the chorus. "Yeah I built it. No help from Uncle Sam."

Obama's campaign argues that his words, meant to stress the value of government in fostering infrastructure, were taken out of context.

VOIGHT ON OBAMA

The Virginia delegation served up some celebrity with its political breakfast Monday.

Jon Voight, the Academy Award-winning actor better known to today's moviegoers as the father of Angelina Jolie, joined Tagg Romney, son of the presidential candidate, to talk government spending, media coverage and President Barack Obama's record at the delegation's morning session.

Delegate Erin Smith of Leesburg, Va., says Voight complained that the media wasn't providing balanced coverage of the two candidates. She says Voight also argued that on several issues Obama campaigned on, he acted differently in office.

___

TEMPEST IN A TOTE BAG?

Maybe Mitt Romney assumes GOP delegates won't read all the way to page 177 of his book, "No Apology," included in their gift bags.

If they do, they'll find an uncomfortable sentence for Romney ? a sentence dropped from the paperback edition. It alludes to his push, as Massachusetts governor, to require all residents to obtain insurance as part of health care reforms.

"We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care," Romney wrote. That sounds a lot like the health care mandate in "Obamacare," which Romney now vows to undo.

In the paperback edition, the passage refers only to preventing a government takeover of health care. Publications including the Washington Examiner took note of the hardback's presence at the convention.

Of course, hardbacks make nicer gifts. And the swag bags don't include much else ? mints and sunglasses, mainly.

HURRICANE GOP?

Dorothy Crockett says she wasn't about to let Isaac, the tropical storm gaining hurricane strength, keep her from a minute of the Republican National Convention.

The Arkansas spitfire ? decked out in red, white and blue from her jacket to her earrings ? was among a couple hundred delegates who showed up for the abbreviated opening Monday despite the cancellation of the speaking schedule.

"At my age I have never experienced a hurricane," the 77-year-old from northeast Arkansas says. "The only hurricane I want to experience is the Republicans taking over the House, the Senate and the White House. This is the Republican hurricane."

? Brian Bakst ? Twitter http://twitter.com/Stowydad

___

CHOICE SEATING

Mitt Romney's adopted state of Massachusetts is rewarded at the Republican National Convention with prime seating ? just feet from where he'll accept the nomination this week. It's a rare honor for Massachusetts, a Democratic bastion used to being relegated to the back of the hall.

Kerry Healy, who served as lieutenant governor under Romney, is at the front of the front next to others who helped his rise. It reflects, Healy says, "a new thing for Massachusetts to have a Republican nominee for president. We have had plenty of the other kind."

Also in choice seats: delegates from battleground states of Virginia and Ohio as well as Romney's birth state of Michigan and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin.

A new Weizmann Institute study appearing August 26 in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone -- even when no odor is present -- both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv -- Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed -- namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas -- including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning -- even for a moment -- disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor -- either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present -- by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone -- with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones -- those associated with bad smells -- provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" -- which makes us forget most of our dreams -- may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie -- what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

I'm actually sitting across from Dave as I type this, so my first visit to a Slate Breakfast Table is actually taking the form of lunch at a downtown Tampa sandwich-and-salad shop run by a social-service ministry.?

I can boast, in the type of construction used by the likes of Bob Schieffer, that I've covered every major-party national nominating convention since 1997?plus the 2000 "shadow convention" in which Arianna Huffington laid hands upon John McCain. (We were all so young then.)

That summer Republicans accused Al Gore of running a "reinvention convention." We remember the nominee's adoption of the Shrummian people-vs.-the-powerful shtick, but the more interesting reinvention may have been the one that Gore didn't have the confidence to stick with. If you recall, Gore asked Spike Jonze to do his version of a Man From Hope film; we were informed at the time that Being John Malkovich was Gore's favorite new movie. The movie Jonze made depicted the nerdy deadpan Gore many of us never met until David Remnick's 2004 profile.

That's because, after commissioning the film, convention planners basically buried it, running it at something like 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, so far ahead of the usual stage festivities that no one but C-SPAN viewers and Staples Center ushers saw it live. (I remember catching a bit of it in my Beverly Hills hotel room very late that night as C-SPAN reran the whole night's coverage.)

I don't know if the full story of the Gore-Jonze interaction was ever told, but it always seemed to offer the decoder ring for those who wondered why Gore's campaign was unable to take this smart, well-humored, and interesting guy and introduce him on those terms to the American people. After all, Gore was the guy who decided that?instead of a Harry Thomason or Mark McKinnon?he wanted Spike Jonze to tell his story. In my imagined version of that campaign, I can see Gore's advisers watching the Jonze film and quashing it because its subject just came off as so dorky.

We'll see what the Romney reinvention looks like, but I suspect I may come away from this week with the same feeling I had as I left Los Angeles 12 years ago. Do Romney's advisers truly know or like their candidate enough as a person to let him be himself in front of the whole country?

Can Education Loan Make Right Of Every Student

Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on Saturday a loan education is a right of every student and staff with public sector banks (PSBs) that are rejecting a large number of applications can be penalized for refusing loans.

"Bank Account is an individual right. This is not a gift from a bank loan and the bank is the right of every student," Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi after a meeting with the heads of banks public sector (OSP), adding that the issue of student loans is close to his heart

"No request for a deserving candidate, if he ***** she meets the parameters that must be turned down by the agent (bank) its receipt. If a loan is not given, the decision may be adopted that at a higher level than the agent who receives the loan application, "Chidambaram said.

It was the first meeting between Chidambaram and heads of PSO since he took charge of the Ministry of Finance August 1.

The agenda of the meeting included four questions about student loans, including expansion, time-limited elimination of applications, education loans to deserving students admitted under management quota and ready for courses leading to a professional degree.

According to Chidambaram, under the new policy, if an increase in the release of education loan is detected, then there may be punitive actions against the Branch Manager.

"A case of rejection of the application or both can be a monitoring problem, but if the industry has reached a critical mass as five or ten cases of rejection, then there may be action against the director," said Chidambaram said.

"It is very important that all students who meet the parameter should get a loan because it is right.

PSBs are working on the modalities surrounding the budget announcement of a credit guarantee fund for student loans. They also work on a scoring mechanism institutions, courses and student loan disbursement.

US astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

The BBC's Pallab Ghosh, who interviewed Armstrong, says he had an ''ice cool attitude'' which made him an excellent astronaut

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.

A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

US President Barack Obama said Armstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

'Reluctant hero'

Mr Aldrin told the BBC's Newshour programme: "It's very sad indeed that we're not able to be together as a crew on the 50th anniversary of the mission? [I will remember him] as a very capable commander."

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000, in a rare public appearance.

In a statement, his family praised him as a "reluctant American hero" who had "served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut".

The statement did not say where Armstrong died.

He had surgery to relieve four blocked coronary arteries on 7 August.

Product Creation Advice ? How Do I Sell My Audio Product Now ...

?

By Maritza Parra

I recently did a question and answer webinar and received many questions on the same subject?what exactly to do once you?ve created your audio product.

?I feel the only thing holding me up is the actual piecing together of getting my new product listed on my site, adding a payment option and getting all of the steps done in the right order. I feel paralyzed because I?m afraid I?ll miss something. The order of doing everything is what I?m overwhelmed by? help!?

Here?s a list of what to do after you?ve created your audio product

1. To Edit or Not to Edit. Does your audio product need some small editing? Keyword here is small. You don?t want to get stuck on making it perfect. Remember, it?s all about progress and not about perfection. Do you need to edit your audio? If your child is crying in the background or there?s a dog barking? yes. If you speak normally and have some Ahs and Ums? no. As long as the content is good, you don?t need to sound like you spent weeks in a professional studio. Get a copy of a low-cost or free audio editing software if you think you should do some small editing. Be sure and plan ahead for uninterrupted quiet when creating your audios because many times, you can create your audio without the need to edit afterward.

2. Brainstorm a Great Title. Think about what your audio product will deliver to your customers. What is it they really want? Try to avoid ?cutesy? titles that can detract from the value of your information.

3. Consider a Cover. Seriously think about getting a professional cover created for your audio product. This creates a higher perceived value in the mind of potential customers and clients. You can also just have a low-cost logo created as long as it looks professional in place of an audio CD cover.

4. Write The Product Sales Page. Wherever you put your audio product for sale, you will need some compelling sales copywriting. This is a great skill to cultivate. You can also choose to outsource this is you have the budget. When writing your sales copy, remember it is all about the customer and the bottom line benefits they will get from your product. This is not the place to focus on you and your greatness (?though I am sure you are!)

5. Choose How to Accept Money. You have many alternatives in shopping carts and there is always paypal. In the past, PayPal was seen as unprofessional but those days are over. It?s a fabulous option today. You are up and running very quickly and when you make a sale, the money you?ve earned is available instantly instead of days later as with a traditional shopping cart and merchant account.

6. Add Your Buy Now Button. Get the code for your button and place it in your sales page several times throughout the page. This is like asking people to buy several times. Don?t just ask once.

7. Ask Your List to Buy Now. It doesn?t matter how ?small? you feel your list community is, as soon as you have your sales page with your buy now button ready, ask your list community to buy your audio product. Give them a special incentive to do so immediately. A subscriber appreciation gift of X dollars if they purchase within the next 3 days. Email them each of these days to remind them of why they should buy your product (the benefit to them) and how many days or hours they have left to purchase your product at this special price. This serves several purposes, you will get a burst of confidence and momentum from seeing your first sales in this product and the infusion of cash can help you continue to find new subscribers and customers.

8. Find New Subscribers and Customers. After you?ve created your product and put it online to sell, it isn?t over. Just like a ?real? bricks and mortars business, you should always be looking for new potential customers and clients.

9. Keep Asking for the Sale. Do not hide your product once you?ve created it. Place a link to your sales page on your blog, recommend it as a subscriber resource in your newsletter or articles. Every once in a while, have another sales price event.

And now I would like to invite you to claim your Free Instant Access to my ?Easy Product Creation Secrets? Video to learn to record an audio product for free, turn it into an Ebook, turn that into a Video product and more when you visit http://www.ProductCreationBonus.com.

Wisconsin spends more on prisons that college aid - WTAQ

For the first time, Wisconsinites are spending more tax money to send criminals to prison than to send kids to college. Governor Scott Walker and Republican lawmakers budgeted $2.2-billion dollars for the Corrections Department in the current two-year budget ? and only $2.1-billion for the University system. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reviewed over 20 years of state budgets ? and it found that the trend was building over that time with numerous policy changes. Both parties are responsible. And the same trend is happening nationally.
