Gwen Stefani: Motherhood isn't what you think it's going to be ...

If I had to choose, I think Gwen Stefani would get my vote for the coolest mom in Hollywood. She has two beautiful little boys and a seemingly happy 10-year marriage, she fronts a rock band, has her own clothing collection, always looks perfectly put together? and somehow manages to make it all look rather effortless. Oh, and did I mention the abs? Ridiculous.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, though, the No Doubt singer admits that being Gwen Stefani isn?t quite as effortless as it may appear. In fact, like a lot of moms, she says she often feels like she?s ?letting everyone down.?

Her band-mate ? and ex-boyfriend ? Tony Kanal says he?s witnessed first-hand the way she struggles to keep all of these balls in the air, saying,?She thinks she?s failing at everything. It?s hard to manage that many things: She?s got the band, her family, her husband, her clothing lines. To watch her being torn in different directions ended up being the push and shove that she almost needed to make the record.? He?s referring of course to No Doubt?s new album ? their first in years ? Push and Shove.

Gwen, 43, says that just getting the album made proved to be a pretty remarkable feat.

?Getting to the studio and not being able to make it happen, but missing out on being at home, missing out on putting the kids down. What?s more important? I felt so guilty,? she confesses. ?I am letting everyone down in the studio right now; I?m letting down my kids; I?m letting down myself. Because time was so precious.?

She?s been trying to balance music and motherhood since her oldest son Kingston was born. She recalls her first solo tour, breastfeeding her baby backstage, putting him to bed and then heading right out to perform. ?I did that for 100 shows,? Gwen says.

By now you?d think she?d have that balancing act down pat, but as her boys get older ? Kingston is 6, Zuma is 3 ? she says that if anything it?s all just getting harder.

?It?s superfun being a mom, but it?s not what you think it?s going to be. And it?s really gradual. At first, your life is totally the same. You have this cute little thing that you get to drive around everywhere and you?re so proud and it?s amazing. And as they grow older, it really does start to change your life. Like, Oh, my God, they have school, they have to get through first grade, they have to learn to read.? She laughs. ?It starts getting so serious, and you?re like, Aaaaaaah!?

I?m sure that, like a lot of famous families, Gwen and her husband Gavin Rossdale enjoy the benefit of nannies, personal assistants and whatever other hired help they may want. But her struggle to divide her time between her career and her kids seems genuine ? it?s definitely something I can relate to (nannies and rock hard abs aside, that is).

What do you think of Gwen?s interview? Can you empathize?
